In search of... EQ in Action!

Lisa Griebel Photo

Since January, I have had the honor of teaching a graduate level Leadership course at St. Mary's University in Minneapolis. It is a great program that meets the needs of adult learners on many levels - including those of us who really like to teach!

Recently, I invited 3 guest speakers to share their organization's leadership vision - what is it, how was it developed and how is it being implemented?

What I loved about this experience was the individual and organizational diversity that each person represented. Quality Bicycle Products (QBP), University of Minnesota Physicians and Kulture Klub Collaborative could not be more different and similar at the same time.

All three speakers brought authenticity, motivation and compassion. They energized us with their clarity of vision/purpose and their unconscious competence in emotional intelligence. It was a wonderful morning for all of us.

If you are interested in sharing an  EQ in Action story  please contact me. I would like publish it in future newsletters.

Greetings!
Seems like everyone I talk to these days is a little 'edgy.' No surprise given the current economic challenges we are facing. And yet - more often than not, I am starting to hear a few more positive than negative comments.

All of us will find resources to support our individual journeys. And over the next few months, I will share some of the resources I have found to be personally useful.

The first is a podcast series I have been listening to called Repossessing Virtue and is part of the regular Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) Speaking of Faith program. The intention behind this series is to explore the moral, spiritual, and practical aspects of the economic downturn.

Balance WithinEsther Sternberg is a rheumatologist, stress researcher, and author of The Balance Within. Her brief interview entitled: The Economic Crisis in Biological Terms offers some very practical tips for dealing with stress.

I'd be curious to learn what you are doing to take care of yourself during these uncertain times - drop me a note and let me know.

Good Books etc...
The good news is that there will always be good books and other resources to recommend. The new year has already enlightened me with many good books that I am happy to share with others. Check out Lisa's List for a larger selection of books etc... that I have read and highly recommend.

I am always adding to this list, so be sure to visit often (and let me know what you are reading.)

Here are a few of my current favorites:

How we DecideHow We Decide
By Jonah Lehrer
A few weeks ago, I listened to an interview that Kerri Miller (MPR's Midmorning show) did with Jonah Lehrer entitled Instinct vs. Analysis. I listened to it again recently and think you will find it interesting.

"Since Plato, philosophers have described the decision-making process as either rational or emotional: we carefully deliberate, or we blink and go with our gut. But as scientists break open the mind's black box with the latest tools of neuroscience, they re discovering that this is not how the mind works.

Our best decisions are a finely tuned blend of both feeling and reason and the precise mix depends on the situation. When buying a house, for example, it s best to let our unconscious mull over the many variables. But when we re picking a stock, intuition often leads us astray. The trick is to determine when to use the different parts of the brain, and to do this, we need to think harder (and smarter) about how we think. ..." Read More

Resiliency AdvantageThe Resiliencey Advantage
by Al Siebert (author)

My copy of this book so 'dog eared' and marked up with highlighter that I should really get a new copy. This is a fantastic resource for anyone who has an interest in building personal resilience or helping others through training/coaching to build resilience. It is easy to read and has practical exercises to support the content.
"Resiliency - the ability to adapt to life's changes and crises - is the key to a healthy, productive life. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to get bogged down by feelings of anger and helplessness. The Resiliency Advantage helps readers banish negative, self-defeating thoughts and break free from the roles of "victim" and "good child" while improving problem-solving skills, maintaining humor and optimism during rough times, and becoming both self-reliant and socially responsible. By mastering the five stages of development - sustaining health, energy, and positive feelings; handling challenges; achieving positive self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-concept; honing the skills and attributes of highly resilient people; and developing a talent for serendipity - readers learn to stand up to adversity, overcome obstacles, and meet life head on..." EQ-i Certification Training

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a critical competence for personal and professional success. Help your clients lead a more successful and satisfying life by developing their EQ.

The EQ-i (Emotional Quotient Inventory) is the first validated assessment to measure emotional/social functioning. It is being used by coaches and consultants worldwide to support life/work coaching and mentoring, organization, leadership and team development.

Certification training will teach you what you need to know to successfully administer the EQ-i. The session is designed to provide hands-on practice to help you internalize and strengthen your skill at analyzing, interpreting and debriefing the EQ-i.

At the end of EQ-i Certification, you will understand the Bar On model and concepts of emotional intelligence as well as the science behind the instrument.

Recent Testimonials

"I have had a strong interest in Emotional Intelligence since I first heard about it in the mid 90s. I have since found it be a tool that provides a great breadth and depth of self understanding and, ultimately, opportunity for growth.

After being exposed to the EQi assessment for many years, I have finally been lucky enough to become certified to administer and interpret it.  I say 'lucky' because my trainer was Lisa Griebel, who made this training a great experience! I have always been fearful of getting near any kind of statistical training, but Lisa made the material easy to understand and apply. She used a variety of very effective teaching methods, and always showed enormous patience with her students.

I went in fearing my ability to 'pass' the certification, and left feeling that I'd like to take the training all over again!"
