In search of... EQ in Action!

EQ in Action
is everywhere...What were you doing on January 15, 2009 when US Airways Flight 1549 ditched in the Hudson River? My heart sank when I heard the news
and then a miracle happened! They ALL SURVIVED.
After reading the articles and watching the interviews, I remember
thinking that this was a perfect example of EQ
in Action - cognitive and emotional intelligence working in sync with each
other. Pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III and his crew are
smart and well trained. In this situation, they knew exactly what they needed
to do technically to land the plane
safely. And they knew what they needed to do emotionally to land the plane safely. Effective emotional
management (remaining calm) helped the crew direct passengers to the emergency
exits onto the inflatable slides. Less
than 5-minutes after takeoff, Flight 1549 was floating in the Hudson River and four
minutes later, a ferry boat was beginning to rescue passengers. This is a
remarkable story on so many levels. We have so needed a miracle and here it is.

Greetings!
Now and then a talent shows up in my life and I am compelled to share this person with everyone I know. Such is the case with Kevin Cannon, a Minneapolis based cartoonist.
I met Kevin 10 years ago when he was in college and knew then that there was something REALLY special about this young man. Fortunately, I am not the only one who recognizes his talent.
The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA by Mark Schultz was published in January 2009. Zander Cannon and Kevin Cannon (no relation) co-illustrated this book. You may be wondering what makes this book so cool and why am I so excited about it. Well, all I can say is...when was the last time you saw a comic book that helped you learn hard science concepts like genetics?
About the same time that this book was published, it was also named one of the top ten 2009 Great Graphic Novels for Teens from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) because it meets the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens.
Finally, The Stuff of Life was the lead story on National Public Radio's Science Friday program (1/30/09). Ira Flatow (show's host) interviewed the author, Mark
Schultz who was very enthusiastic when he talked about working with his illustrators (Zander Cannon and Kevin Cannon).
If you have a few minutes, I think you will enjoy this brief interview. |

More 'Good Things'
I received such positive responses to the 'Good Things' I included in last month's newsletter that I have decided to continue and expand this section by inviting you to share your Good Books etc..., Good Learning and Good Giving experiences. |
Good Books etc...
The good news is that there will always be good books and other resourcesto recommend. The new year has already enlightened me with many good books that I am happy to share with others. Check out Lisa's List for a larger selection of books etc... that I have read and highly recommend.
I am always adding to this list, so be sure to visit often (and let me know what you are reading.)
Here are a few of my current favorites:
Mixed Emotions Petra Martin (Creator) and Kris Wiltse (Illustrator)
I ran across this wonderful resource quite by accident one day and was so intrigued that I bought it. Instantly I thought of multiple applications for this beautiful deck of cards. It is a brilliant way to help people identify quickly (in a non-threatening way) how they are feeling about different situations they are facing. I've shared these with several practitioners and they agree about the inherent value.
"Have you ever wished it were easier to make decisions, solve problems,
improve relationships, or figure out which career is right for you?
Well, it can be. You were born with an inner guidance system--your
feelings--and Mixed Emotions can help you learn to use it. Mixed
Emotions features beautifully illustrated cards that you can use to
access the full power of your inner guidance system. You lay out the
cards in meaningful ways to identify patterns and subtleties that you
might not have considered before. The knowledge you gain gives you new
insights and helps you consider new options. Whether you have a
decision to make, a conflict to resolve..."Read More
slide:ology the art and science of creating great presentations by Nancy Duarte (author)
After reading A Whole New Mind (Daniel Pink) last summer, I have been paying more attention to the design elements in presentations and trying to incorporate new things along the way. This is a wonderful resource filled with fun (and easy) ideas.
"No matter where you are on the organizational ladder, the odds are high
that you've delivered a high-stakes presentation to your peers, your
boss, your customers, or the general public. Presentation software is
one of the few tools that requires professionals to think visually on
an almost daily basis. But unlike verbal skills, effective visual
expression is not easy, natural, or actively taught in schools or
business training programs. slide:ology fills that void." Read More

Giving is Good!
On January 19th, our national day of service, I had the privilege of volunteering for Bridging, an organization that has been serving families in transition since 1987. They have an amazing story to share. Social Responsibility and community service have been core values for Crescendo Inc. from the beginning. Since 1996, we have contributed financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually to many non-profit organizations in Minnesota and around the U.S in the names of our clients. We know that we have and continue to make a difference. For this reason, Crescendo Inc. rewards you for referrals by giving back to your community! When someone you refer to Crescendo Inc. completes EQ-i Certification Training, we make a contribution in your name to the non-profit organization of your choice. For more information, contact Lisa Griebel. |
