In search of... EQ in Action!

In early December, I certified another group of incredible people to assess, train and coach others using the EQ-i (Emotional Quotient Inventory). We had such great discussions at the session about emotional intelligence (what is it, why it is relevant and how can we work with it) that it occurred to me to ask others to share their EQ Experiences. If you are willing to share your EQ in Action story (how you have incorporated it into your your organization or practice) please contact me. I would like publish it in future newsletters.
Thanks for your help. I'm sure we can all benefit from your experience. |

Greetings!
As 2008 draws to a close, I found it energizing to reflect on the 'good things' that have happened this year - the things for which I am most grateful. My list is incredibly long and includes so many of the experiences and opportunities that have been given to me as a result of my connection to you - my clients, my colleagues, my friends.
Sometimes I move so fast that I forget to remember to slow down and appreciate the good things happening within and around me.
During this holiday season, I wish for you the gift of presence - being present to appreciate what is happening now.
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift; that is why they call it the present."
- Eleanor Roosevelt -
Warm Holiday Greetings,

More 'Good Things'
I received such positive responses to the 'Good Things' I included in last month's newsletter that I have decided to continue and expand this section by inviting you to share your Good Books, Good Training and Good Giving experiences. |
Good Books The good news is that there will always be good books to recommend. Check out Lisa's List for a larger selection of books that I have read and highly recommend.
I am always adding to this list, so be sure to visit often (and let me know what you are reading.)
Here are a few of my current favorites:
Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell(Author)
Earlier this month I listened to Malcolm Gladwell talk about his new book, Outliers: The Story if Success. He offers an interesting perspective and one, I think, that will contribute to some insightful conversations.
Malcolm Gladwell (author of The Tipping Point and Blink) takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. "It is not the brightest who succeed," Gladwell writes. "Nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities - and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them."
Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice and Leadership by Lee G. Bolman (author) and Terrence E. Deal (author)
This book was recommended to me by a business professor from my alma mater, Millikin University. It is a great book that presents a compelling (and easy to grasp) leadership model.
"Using the powerful tool of "reframing" (deliberately looking at situations from more than one vantage point to bring order out of confusion and to build high-performing, responsive organizations), we can become more versatile managers and more artistic leaders. The authors present four practical perspectives or "frames" from which to work and show us how to become constructive change agents. This book serves as a guide in selecting a leadership strategy that responds to an organization's current and future needs."
The Four Frame Model:
The Structural Frame
The Human Resource Frame
The Political Frame
The Symbolic Frame
Doris Kearns Goodwin is a Pulitzer Prize winning author, historian and political commentator. Family and friends shouldn't be too surprised when they open their Christmas present from me this year - it is a fantastic book.
"Team of Rivals is a book centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how they shaped the most significant presidency in our nation's history. It is a multiple biography of the entire team of personal and political competitors that Lincoln put together to lead the country through its greatest crisis. Doris Kearns Goodwin profiles five key players during this historic time - four of whom contended for the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and all of whom later worked together in Lincoln's cabinet."
Abraham Lincoln, President Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury William H. Seward, Secretary of State Edward Bates, Attorney General
Portrait of Passion by Gail B. Stewart (Author) & Paul H. Phillips (Photographer)
I am particularly honored to recommend this book. I am friends with both Gail (author) and Paul (photographer). This is a beautiful book that gets to the soul of these amazing young women through their personal stories and pictures.
"Portrait of Passion discovers the secrets of the 2007 U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. Gail Stewart, author of more than 200 books for young adults, weaves fascinating stories of these great role models into an enticing and helpful read for soccer fans of all ages. What were the players like growing up? How did they acquire their toughness? How do they handle controversies? What would they have done differently? The book is filled with over 250 photos by top sports photographer Paul Phillips who followed the team from Chicago to China to capture stunning game action and off-the-field candids."
