Silver Salmon Revival
When the non-tribal commercial fishermen (both gillnetters and seiners) fish around the San Juan Islands at this time of year we need to have a "revival box". In case we catch the wrong kind of fish we can revive him and send him back into the ocean to live another day.
We do this because there is a wild run of silvers going up the Thompson River (I think?) that has been having low returns. So in order to fish the healthy stocks of chums, we have to be able to revive and release these silvers, which is a "stock of concern".
The revival box really does bring 'em back to life. First off, we make short sets so the fish don't completely die when they are caught in the net. If we catch a silver, we put him in the revival box, which has a fast stream of water coming from a hose immersed in the box. We hold the fishes head so the stream of water is going into its mouth, directing the rush of fresh sea water through its gills, which causes the fish to "breathe" oxygen from the water, thereby reviving it. After a few minutes he gets his little fishy head together and we release him over the side as good as new, with one helluva story to tell his pals. Maybe the survivors will see it as a spa treatment, and will tell their friends how cool it is to get caught in the net?

Sorry, No Pinks
Life Cycle of Wild Salmon
Unfortunately, I missed the pink salmon run here in the San Juans.
The Satisfaction was ready to go with the net aboard and a willing crew, but on the run out to the fishing grounds I cut inside of Goose Island in Cattle Pass and crunched the bow on a rock. --OOPS!-- If you're bucking the tide you can cut inside the island and travel with fair tide, which saves quite a bit of time, but I just lost a lifetime of time-savers in the time I spent fixing the damage.
Instead of providing islanders all the pinks they could handle, I was grinding fiberglass, and laminating layers of that gooey nightmare to the bottom of my boat. The job took over two weeks to complete--but I wasn't working at it every day. I still managed a couple silver openings in Bellingham with my skiff, but I am really disappointed I ouldn't bring back a bevy of those affordable pinks to the island.
Now we have to wait two more years for the next taste of pink salmon.

Food Inc. at the Palace Theater
Manager Aaron King at the Palace Theater tells us the movie we've been hearing so much about,"FOOD, INC."will be playing matinees this week (call 370-5666 for showtimes)
As a commercial fishing family we support and encourage everyone to know where their dinner originated. After watching this film you will be happy to know that we on this island are very fortunate to have so many sources of local meat, fresh milk, cheese and veggies. Linda Degnan Cobos has made a list of local farm stands and farmers markets for quick reference. I have been handing them out at the beginning of the show and the paper slowly turns to gold in your lap as the movie progresses. Come to the show (It is an important movie and I encourage attendance by all youth and adults in our community.) For a complete listing and to see what one person has done for YOU please visit the webpage of your local Slow Food Chapter. Membership is not necessary to paticipate in any local Slow Food event but if you have ever considered joining this organization, NOW is a great time because they are running a membership campaign where you can join for any amount you choose until October 15th. That is right. You can join for $1.00 or $100 so feel free to visit Slow Food USA's webpage, too!
See "Food, Inc." this weekend, and know and support your local farmer!!
