Greetings!
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to put our hard-earned money back into the pockets of our friends and neighbors. This is a partial list of items from island vendors. I will add more local vendors in a future email but wanted to get the ball rolling before more time goes by. Come by the shop some time to check out the goods. Even more importantly, thanks for taking the time to forward this email to a friend so they can know how easy it is to help build local economy. |

Amanda Zee
Sweet Earth Herbs Amanda Zee is a quiet success in our shop. There are many body care lines to choose from these days. Amanda fills in the gaps, offers options for traditional salves and provides unique blends of herbs to be used as soaks in the bath for a variety of different effects. Amanda makes a perfectly wonderful cream, naturally providing a low SPF for sun and skin. The warming effect of her sweet sole rub translates into a wonderful foot vitality, keeping us connected to our feet. Aurevedic blends for specific doshas and lip balms are also part of her inventory. Visit her at the Farmer's Market or come to Compost it. Sure, you can buy on-line or off-island, but why would you when we have great products right here on San Juan Island. Our body care lines are good for you and are healthier for our planet! |
Bruce Gregory and Colleen Howe
Mitchell Bay Nursery Colleen and Bruce have a wonderful farm. You can purchase soap, sheepskins and plants among other things. Take a drive out to Mitchell Bay Nursery. A visit to her garden is a pleasure indeed. People pay money to go on garden tours in all kinds of communities. We have a gem right here and you are free to visit her garden during nursery hours. You will want to purchase a few deer-resistant plants while you are there and a bar of soap. Feel free to purchase a sheepskin while you are there, too. We are fortunate enough to keep a few of Mitchell Bay's sheepskins in the shop. $125 @ shop or $100 @ Mitchell Bay Farm. |
Mr. Miller's doghouses are well constructed and built with your pooch's comfort in mind. The house is above ground and will keep your dog warm and dry. The doghouse is quite attractive and will blend in very nicely with your home. They are not plastic! They will never end up in a landfill. Isn't that terrific? In lieu of photo which I still need to take, please drive by and take a look. They are right out front.

Andrea makes jewelry. Her husband, Matt, travels and brings home beads from interesting places. He seeks out or runs across women's cooperatives and supports them as he goes. This gives Andrea's jewelry a nice feel. But the best thing is the care taken to create a beautiful product. She even does her own wiring on several of the pieces and it is detailed, beautiful and functional work. This reminds me to mention that these artists love what they do and spend hours creating. The prices are very reasonable. The artist gets a little. Compost It gets a little. The least we can do is choose to buy from our local island friends first. The more you purchase from local vendors, the more checks I write to some very lovely and talented locals. It feels wonderful! |
We were so excited when Nomi brought in her stuffed animals. There are cats, alpaca, monsters, chicks, turtles, rabbits and more, all made from lonely socks and other recycled fabrics. Nomi is an excellent seamstress so you can depend on a quality product hand-stiched with artistic talent. These animals and monsters are also stuffed with love and I have personally witnessed the love they bring or will bring to the lucky person who will care for and love them for years to come. Food, clothing and shelter are esential. A stuffed friend with lots of personality and staying power can be essential for a child. When not just any teddy will do and you are looking for something special for someone dear, please come by and check out this little orphanage. |
Steven Gutmann
Chicken Chuck/Kitchen Tools
Steven calls himself a handyman, and he is, but he is so much more. He is a creative artist. Come see his wooden kitchen tools. You will use this tool for everything from scooting food around the saute pan to spreading frosting on a cake. Steven has also created a stir in the world of chickens and is one of the reasons why people stop by the shop. People adore the chicken tractors he has built (pictured is a tractor similar to Steve's. I used this photo in lieu of.) When I get around to bringing in a couple of chickens, people go crazy happy. Children laugh to see such sport. Chickens are just so wonderful. Steven can make your chicken dreams come true. If you don't have time to build a coop don't hesitate to hire a chicken coop contractor! Chicken Chuck $230. |
Margaret Thorson
Thousand Flower Farm
Margaret makes beautiful Swedish Style Rag Rugs. We keep several in the shop from which to choose. Filling our homes with gorgeous handcrafted items and knowing you are supporting a local farmer feels very good. These rugs are practical, washable and quite useful and beautiful. You will feel you made a wise decision when spending your hard-earned money. $100/each. You can save a few bucks if you catch her at the farmer's market, but the convenience of a local shop with regular hours is useful for helping move more rugs so tell your friends to stop by Compost It and let's keep Margaret busy this winter! P.S. I also have a beautiful wool rug, another creation of Margaret's. It is hanging on the wall behind the register. Come take a look-see-shall-we. |
Seda Durham-Guckian
Beautiful Sterling Designs
Seda is a young talent among us. Her designs show talent beyond her years and I love hearing customers ooh and aah over her earrings, unaware she is a tween! |
Laura Bell
Clothing, Jewelry, Journals, and more!
Laura Bell is a prolific talent. She finds time to sew and create while raising two beautiful children with her husband and works hard at more than one side job. You will find her own art screenprinted on comfortable organic t-shirts or upcycled onto gently used clothing. If you have a little squirt crawling around the house, you will want to dress your child exclusively in Laura's durable designs which plant any toddler in a garden of fashion-forward. Other mothers will be beside themselves with clothing covet issues and the constant query, "Where did you get that?" She found use for left-over scraps of leather and designed beautiful leather wrist-wear. So, what are you waiting for? Come in and see for yourselves. |
Sandbar Soaps Blog is dedicated to my adventures in soap making. Sandbar Soaps is just me (Heather) located on San Juan Island where I live with my husband and two kids. I love how something as simple as a bar of soap can be an intricate beautiful thing. But yet is still "just soap." Scrubby, scrubby. $4.00/bar or Orca Soap $6.00/bar.
