Fish Information From My Favorite Local Fisherman

Greetings!

Hello fish-eaters! This is Matt, and I'm on my way home from Alaska with a load of HALIBUT! And since I want everybody to eat my fish, this is what I have for you!

Flag Poles Off The Stern Of F/V Discovery
These are the mountains in SE Alaska by Sitka.  The mountain range goes all the way up to Prince William Sound.  Matt recognizes and appreciates the beauty.

ALSO, come to our house for a FISH FEED on Sunday, MAY 3rd, 1-5:00 p.m. Everything you see will be on the menu, including the halibut, of course! This is a fundraiser for Spring Street International School, but if you are not in a philanthropic state right now please come anyway because all of you are my fish customers and I appreciate that you keep me in business, so let me cook you a little fish! Bring the kids--we have a great yard for kids! We're at 252 Treeline Drive (out Cattle Point to Portland Fair).  Our driveway entrance has a sign shaped like a fish and it says, "Think Fish"

Whale Tale Longlining
Sperm Whale
Matt sees lots of whales every year.  Sometimes they eat the halibut.  It is like a sushi bar where the food rolls past your seat and you just take what looks good.

FRESH ROCKFISH, $3.00 per pound for the whole fish. We caught these on this last halibut trip and brought them down on the boat fresh. The recovery isn't very high when filleted, but if you slice these guys up and boil them up with some potatoes and onions, well, any true Norwegian can tell you how good it is (just be sure to scrape the scales off!). And if you stew up the heads along with it, the broth is absolutely out of this world.

No Ego Here
George and Brett are fellow crew members these long years.  They are quite used to Matthew.

SMOKED BLACKCOD: This fish is so rich and oily it is beyond belief- and that's omega-3 oil, so eat up! The price is $15.00 per pound, and I'll guarantee you won't find it anywhere for that price.

SMOKED SOCKEYE SALMON: I caught these fish, and had them smoked at Silvana Meats. $15.00 per pound.

FROZEN SOCKEYE SALMON FILLETS: I was saving a box of these for a Spring Street International School fundraising event, but I do not need it now and it is available to you at a sale price of $8.00 per pound.

The fish is always gaffed in the head so the meat is not damaged.  Aren't you glad to know that?

REGARDING HALIBUT: The circumstances are just right that I MIGHT be able to bring some fish back to the island to sell. These fish run between 10-20 pounds and cost $6.00 per pound. These little fellows are delicious. If you want a fish or two let us know and if it happens you'll be the first one on the list.
Sunlight III ready for haul-out at the end of the season
F/V Sunlight III, Bristol Bay
This will be Matt's next adventure.  He leaves at the end of the month.  Matt just had this boat surveyed.  I decided to read the survey report.  After skimming through, I got to the comments section.  The surveyor made the comment that this wooden boat (1967 Bryant) was one of the nicest and well-kept bay boats he has ever seen.  Hmm... He takes good care of his fish.  He takes good care of his boat.  And yet he has been mistaken for a homeless man on more than one
occassion.

SPECIAL NOTE: AVAILABLE IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.  WE WILL SEND ANOTHER EMAIL WHEN THEY ARRIVE.
Vacuum-packed YELLOWEYE ROCKFISH FILLETS: Just as before, all proceeds of these fillets will go to benefit Fish for Teeth. I personally think these rockfish are better than the halibut. They have a rich flavor, and make an unbelievable fish taco! These fillets were processed at the fish plant the day after we delivered them in Sitka, Alaska. There is only a limited amount, and we are asking for a $10 per pound donation to Fish for Teeth.

Happy Man
Happy Man is standing next to a longline tub.  It is filled with line and hooks which will be baited.

So, first you have an opportunity to buy fish on Wednesday.  Hopefully there will be halibut.  I will send out a short email without photos when I get the final word from the fisherman.  There will be frozen rock fish but not by Wednesday because Matt beat the fish home.  We will email again regarding frozen rockfish.  All the other fish is available and we will sell that with halibut (hopefully) on Wednesday.  The following Sunday is our party/fundraiser.  You will have an opportunity to meet the International Students from Spring Street, learn more about the school where our daughter delights in attending, and eat some very tasty fish!
Sincerely,

Maureen Marinkovich
