DAD As An SOS At Work?
Don't Avoid Delegating and you'll work smarter, not harder.

Running a business, and even being a supervisor in someone else's, can quickly turn into a juggling act.  Customer service, marketing, follow-up, networking, administration, sales, business development. . . you name it, you do it.

While it is necessary for all of these functions to be handled, it doesn't necessarily mean that they all need to be handled by you.  Organizing is typically thought of as only applying to "stuff," paperwork, and space.  But it can also be applied to your thoughts about your business and how you do what you do.

Taking a step back and looking at what you do in your business can help you organize a plan for efficient allocation of resources and maximizing your own potential and talents to further your business goals.  Here's a brief how-to. . .

1)
Identify your business goals and what you want to see happen in the next year, as well as all the functions you currently perform.

2) Determine which functions you consider your strengths and which ones consume more time and energy than are warranted because you don't like to do them, aren't good at them, don't know how to do them, or any combination of the above.

3) Choose those functions or tasks that you can appropriately delegate to someone in your company, or that you can outsource to a qualified outside party to get the job done.  You'll free yourself up to do the things you enjoy and that you're good at, which ultimately will allow you to grow your business as well as your bottom line.

What Can I Do About. . . ?
In Its Place answers your questions about organizing tools.

Q:  Okay, I hate to admit it, but even though I love my tools, I don't know how to store them and I can never find what I need when I need it.  Got any suggestions?

A: 1)  Organizing tools is no different than organizing any other items in your home.  Sort through your tools and identify the ones you use most often, and weed out the ones you haven't touched in the last year.  Give those to a buddy who always borrows them anyway, or give away or sell on Craigslist or at your annual neighborhood garage sale.

2) Look at the quantity and size of tools that are remaining, as well as the available storage space (including unused wall space) and determine which tools need to be stored in drawers and which are best stored hanging from a hook or pegboard.

3)  If you're hanging tools, consider outlining the tool's perimeter onto the wall or pegboard to use as a guide as to where it should be kept.  If the tools need to be stored in drawers, keep like items together and consider labeling the drawers to reduce confusion (and so other family members know where to put the tools after they borrow them.)
If you don't have appropriate storage, consider products such as these.
