Are You Ready? Would your business recover from a disaster?
September is National Preparedness Month. You might think that since we don't live in the direct path of a hurricane you don't need to worry about natural disasters or emergencies. But no matter where you live and work, it's important to know what to do if the unexpected happens.
Power outages from storms, flooding, and fire are the more common emergencies that happen in this region. Do you have an established plan of action to handle these situations, and are your employees familiar with it? How are you protecting your paper and electronic files? If you couldn't access your building or office, would you still be able to conduct business?
Emergencies interrupt normal functioning, disrupt your ability to generate revenue, can potentially, damage your products and data, and harm employees.
Organizing and planning ahead can increase your chances of successfully surviving and recovering from a disaster or emergency. Remember to: 1) Identify situations that are most likely to affect your business and develop contingencies for staff, business flow, key procedures, and communication.
2) Keep copies of important documents and information and electronic backups in a portable fireproof and waterproof container.
3) Prepare portable first aid kits and containers stocked with emergency supplies like water, non-perishable food and a can opener, flashlights and batteries, a crank radio, and dust masks.

Earth-Friendly Organizing
"Green" Events. . .
Reusing existing products and purchasing gently used items save you money. But did you know doing so also saves natural resources and keeps those items out of landfills?
Mark your calendar to attend some events taking place this month that help you to reuse, recycle, and support your community:
Enjoy locally grown food, regional and sustainably produced wines, and locally brewed beer at the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture's Harvest Celebration Benefit Dinner in Pittsburgh on September 27, 2008.
If you're looking to sell your high quality, gently used children's clothes, accessories, and related items, or if you're looking to purchase the same, check out these events: Westmoreland Sale for Kids LLC - September 27 & 28, 2008
Snuggle Bugs & Company - September 13 - 20, 2008

What Do I Do With. . . ? In Its Place answers your questions about organizing your mail and your kids' school "stuff."
Q: My kids have been in school for less than two weeks and already the house is cluttered with their book bags and papers. What can we do?
A: 1)Give your kids a "landing spot" for their shoes, book bags, and coats that is convenient and practical but which also fits your home's style .
2) Designate a location where your kids can put their paperwork for you to review or sign, and where you can return it after you've signed it. 3) Help each child create an uncluttered study area that has good lighting, a clean surface, and clearly labeled files or folders by subject to help them store and retrieve school papers when they need them.
Q: What can I do about all the mail and newspapers that keep piling up everywhere?
A: 1) Designate an end table , basket, or other container for newspapers, catalogs, and magazines you've finished reading but haven't yet taken to recycling. 2) Pitch or shred junk mail when it comes in, put your bills in their assigned "bills to pay" location, and keep "action items" in a tickler file or other labeled bin. 3) Schedule a time in your planner or calendar to complete items that require your attention.
