Global Food Security Index from EIU and DuPont 


Index Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)  unveiled on Tuesday the Global Food Security Index, a dynamic scoring tool that measures the various drivers of food security in 105 nations and assesses vulnerabilities country by country. DuPont is the exclusive sponsor.

 

This powerful tool is designed to be used by everyone who is concerned about food security - policymakers, business and industry, NGOs and community leaders and academics and students.

BUSA also lowers its growth forecast for 2012 

SACommenting on the latest World Bank forecast for economic growth in South Africa in 2012, BUSA has also recently revised its outlook for growth to about 2.5% compared with 2.7% a few months ago. This weaker growth performance has been the outcome of both deteriorating global economic conditions as well as domestic constraints on growth. Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development

 

Clean energy USAID has partnered with the Government of Sweden, Duke Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to create Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development

 

This Grand Challenge seeks to transform agricultural productivity and incomes by increasing access to clean energy solutions at all points from farm to market. The focus is on innovative clean energy technologies and innovative business models that can be scaled. While all kinds of organisations are eligible to apply, there is a focus on harnessing the private sector.The official request for proposals has not yet been issued, but it is a good idea to keep your eye on this. Anyone can join the online community of innovators and submit comments and ideas on the Powering Ag website.

FEWS NET Southern Africa, July 2012 


Land_02The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

Protocol on Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures Requirements

 

Citrus FruitSouth African, Chinese and Korean governments have recently reached an agreement on the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) requirements protocol of South African export of Citrus fruit to China and Korea. The protocol pertains only to phytosanitary requirements. Other standards and requirements regarding food and feed safety quality also apply to South Africa, but are outside the scope of this protocol. Click the links for more information:

Briefing session on trade and investment opportunities in Taiwan and Singapore

 

Mission BUSA and the South Africa Chamber of Commerce (SACCI) invite Agbiz members to a briefing session on trade and investment opportunities in Taiwan and Singapore. The briefing session will be held on Monday, 30th July 2012 from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm at BUSA's Offices. Guest speakers will address the business environment in both countries as well as discuss two-way trade and investment opportunities between Taiwan, Singapore with South Africa.  

 

This briefing session will serve as a preparatory meeting for companies and organizations interested in participating in the Taiwan - Singapore trade and investment mission scheduled for 26th - 30th August, 2012.
