Workshop on the Impact of Logistics on Agriculture

LogisticsOn 11 May 2012, the NAMC and the ABC co-hosted a workshop on the transport cost benchmarking in agriculture.

The NAMC report provided a fantastic basis to lay-out challenges and identify the cost-drivers in the sector. RTMS, the smart truck projects, various other cost-cutting and "green" options, together with some industry specific programmes and interventions, were suggested to be amongst the possible solutions to addressing those challenges and to manage the cost-drivers.

Ultimately, the entire agro-industry's value chain, have a responsibility to provide food on a cost-effective manner to the end-consumer. Transport and distribution challenges and cost-drivers impact on all food products at some point or the other. Therefore these issues impact on everyone.

It was identified at the workshop that the agricultural sector's transport and logistics issues are not entirely unique, however, a clear understanding of the sector's specific issues are inevitable to make informed inputs on behalf of the sector and to ultimately address how logistics costs and challenges impact on the cost of food and food security.

It was strongly advised that industry specific groupings should be encouraged to continue their individual initiatives, as they are focussed on their industry's specific needs. To create a platform for industry groupings to learn from and assist each other, it was recommended to establish better sector-wide communication and collaboration:

  1. to create capacity to enable overarching and industry specific research,
  2. to establish a platform for industry specific programmes to learn from and assist each other,
  3. to pro-actively negotiate collectively for enabling policies and interventions, and
  4. to address challenges and create national interventions before it evolves into problems.

BUSA: Implement Youth Wage Subsidy Scheme Soon

Youth UnemploymentBUSA has frequently emphasised the serious challenge posed by the persistence of high youth unemployment in South Africa, about which there is now clearly deepening concern throughout the country and globally. The funds made available by the National Treasury nearly two years ago for a youth wage subsidy should now be constructively deployed to help mitigate youth unemployment.  Read media release»
