Report on South Africa from UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

Right_to_foodThe ABC engaged with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Mr Olivier De Schutter, during his visit in South Africa in July 2011. Even though the ABC did not agree with various of his statements and does not share or support some of the views expressed in his report on South Africa's status regarding the Right to Food, we still recommend members to read the report to get an understanding of the UN's Right to Food Rapporteur's perspectives.
Many of his views are sadly limited to the discussions he had with specific people, especially government officials and rights oriented NGO's, during his visit. The ABC observed a drastic lack in business and economic orientation, both during the engagement with the Special Rapporteur as well as in the report. Since 2007, the ABC have been engaging with government regarding the drastic lack in relevant and sufficient support structures for land reform beneficiaries as well as new black entrants in agriculture, to enable them to successfully enter into the commercial agricultural mainstream. The ABC emphasises that we must integrate small holder farmers into the mainstream commercial value chains in the South African agro-food system.

For the second consecutive year biotech crops in South Africa increased by 100 000 hectares in 2011. The hectarage had continued to increase for the 14th consecutive season, to a record 2.3 million ha (2.2 million in 2010), said Prof Klaus Ammann, professor emeritus of the University of Bern, Switzerland, speaking at a biotech press conference in Pretoria.  Read more»

Record-High Food Prices Boost Farmers' Bottom Lines

Vinyard

Thanks to high commodity prices and surging productivity, U.S. farmers earned a net income of nearly $98 billion last year - a record, according to the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute.

Those strong earnings are helping boost the demand for farmland. In the past year, even as most Americans struggled with falling home prices, farmers saw spikes in the price of land used for agriculture. Read more»

BUSA welcomes the conclusion of the Walmart acquisition matter

Law_4

Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC), welcomes the decision of the Competition Appeals Court. This decision successfully balances the need to project South Africa as an investor-friendly economy, while simultaneously addressing the concerns around job losses and the role of small and medium suppliers. It remains essential, if South Africa is to attain its growth and development goals, to make the country a destination of first choice for foreign investment and for such investors to feel welcome.  Read more»

International Cool Logistics Conference, 24-26 April 2012, Cape Town

Fresh produce

From South African fruit to Kenyan flowers, the trade in perishables generates critical export revenue and employment for Africa. Future growth potential is significant, both at the global and regional level. But to seize the day, Africa must now hone its cold supply chains.

The International Cool Logistics Conference is coming to Cape Town in 24-26 April 2012.  The theme will be "Creating cold chain skills, services and infrastructure to compete in global markets". This event is not to be missed by any agribusiness involved in logistics management of perishable products. Look out for the workshop on RTMS for cold supply chain companies.
