DG of The dti Presents on B-BBEE Amendment Bill

BBBEE

DG, Lionel October, indicated in his presentation that the amendments emanated mainly from proposals that were made by the BEE Advisory Council through the Council's interaction with Cabinet and the Department.

He emphasised that the overall purpose of the Amendment Bill was to get the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment on track and to return it to its original purpose and objectives to ensure that:

* Black people own and run the means of production;

* Transformation legislation was aligned with other plans such as the New Growth Path and the National Development Plan;

* Black entrepreneurs are created by affording them business opportunities;

Jobs are created; and

* B-BBEE is not a get rich quick scheme.

He mentioned the fact that some sectors of the economy were doing better while others were not doing that good while bad elements were circumventing the intentions of the act by fronting. He assured business that the department will provide enough time for consultation including taking the Amendment Bill to NEDLAC. He pleaded with business to advocate for economic transformation in the country.
