COP-17: Implications for Business | | |

The 17th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the seventh Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol was held in Durban from 28 November to 11 December 2011. During this meeting a number of important decisions were adopted. All decisions have been circulated but are also available for downloading on the UNFCCC website at http://unfccc.int. Brief summaries and the implications for the Business Sector are set out in the linked document. Only those decisions affecting developing countries are highlighted. |

ABC in the News: Agribusiness Chamber sees price relief ahead | | |

Published by Business Day, 30 January 2012 EXPECTED higher agricultural product prices this season could bring about some relief for food producers, the Agriculture Business Chamber said last week.
Releasing the agribusiness outlook for this year, the chamber's economic intelligence manager, Lindie Stroebel, said a major concern was that agriculture had shown signs of contraction since the start of last year. Read more» |

Consumers will continue to pay more for food because of high international commodity prices - but not because of shortages resulting from heavy rains which are destroying summer crops and damaging farming infrastructure in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. ''Yes, some of the crops such as tomatoes, green peppers and subtropical fruits and vegetables will be affected, but not other crops like maize and wheat. The reason we are paying high prices is because of rising input costs such as energy, labour and logistics," said John Purchase, CEO at the AgriBusiness Chamber. Read more» |

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSNET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. The Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

Progress with managing the Avian Influenza outbreak in the ostrich industry | | |

The South African Ostrich Business Chamber (SAOBC) is thankful to have learnt that the seventh round of surveillance for the H5N2 Avian Influenza virus in the Klein Karoo Valley since April 2011, proved to be negative - and thus being counted as the first of the two negative rounds needed for the authorities to declare the end of the current disease outbreak. Court finds in favour of Senwes and Senwesbel regarding shares | | |
In a judgement this week, the Northern Gauteng High Court dismissed an application by the Treacle Fund II against Senwes.
Treacle, a minority shareholder in Senwes, brought an application against the agribusiness and its holding company Senwesbel, in July 2010. It was alleged that certain historical share transactions by Senwesbel to acquire shares in Senwes, were invalid. The court was asked to set aside these transactions and that the shares be returned to the original shareholders. Read more» |
