SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY

sOCIAL RESPONSIBLITYIn the past two newsletters you've learned about two of our three areas of focus: Youth Development and Healthy Living. This month we'd like to tell you about the third area of focus, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

The Y has been listening and responding to our communities' most critical social needs for 160 years. Simply put, we think it is important to give back and to support our neighbors. You've probably heard about our Bright Beginnings program that gives at-risk children greater self-esteem and confidence by providing school clothes, shoes, coats and supplies. Bright Beginnings is our most visible response to social need, but every Y program addresses societal issues in some way. For instance, sports programs teach children to cooperate, to work in a team, to be aware of how their actions affect others, and help to fight the largest growing national epidemic for children, obesity.

Through the Y, volunteers, donors, leaders, and partners empower people to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

RUN FOR THE DREAM

Lace up and get ready! The Peninsula YMCA is supporting the 2011 Run for the Dream to be held May 21, 2011. Proceeds from the race support An Achievable Dream and Wounded Warriors. Check out the web site for more information. http://www.runforachievabledream.com/

We need volunteers to help work the race and will offer a training program to help you get into shape to run an 8K! Watch for more information coming soon! Contact Franki Pivarnik for more information. Franki.Pivarnik@peninsulaymca.org

PROGRAM CENTER RENOVATION
Good News! We are renovating our Program Center! We ask for your patience while we work to make the improvements beginning December 13. We are getting a new roof and making a few other changes. The power will be off for two weeks so we are relocating some programs to other places and cancelling four days of group exercise classes. Please ask your instructor or counselor for more details. Construction should be complete by December 24.
ADULT FLAG FOOTBALL
The Adult Flag Football League begins its season on December 8th. Games and practices are on Wednesdays from 5pm-8pm throughout the season which runs Dec. 8th to Jan. 26th. The cost is $30 for Members and $50 for Program Participants. Come ready to play with your team, or if you are interested in playing, please contact Buzz Lambert @ buzz.lambert@peninsulaymca.org. or call 804-776-8846 for more details.
