Greetings!

Back to school time is coming up, and in many states a sales tax holiday is included.  Do you know what items are tax free in your state?  If not, especially bookstores should learn what's eligible, or risk losing business to competitors who know.
Changes for 2.9.1

In version 2.9.1, much of the functionality that used to be in separate programs is being moved to within ExtremePOS, Musicware, and Praiz:

- The ESC Label Utility now appears under the tools tab in inventory maintainance
- The Script Utility and Global Changes features are now available from the tools menu of the login screen.
- Backups may now be made from the initial splash screen.  Additionally, database manager programs such as those for VPD and BRE are now in this location.
- Reports that display in Extreme Report Viewer should now format for the report printer set in options, rather than the windows default printer.

If you are supported and are not yet on any version of 2.9, contact support to arrange an upgrade time.  The upgrade takes approximately two hours (which can increase or decrease depending on connection speed and number of stations), during which time sales cannot be processed.

Video Buyer's Group Conference

Once again this year, representatives from Extreme Point of Sale, Inc will be at this year's Video Buyer's Group Conference, on August 11th and 12th in Minneapolis.  We look forward to seeing many of you there!
Customer Accounts

In your POS software, you may maintain a balance on customers - either by extending them credit or by giving them credit on traded in items.  What do you need to do to set this up?  First, you need customers set up - for more information on this, see the manual.  In the customer maintenance screen, there is an account tab that you may access on saved customers.  Under this tab, you may see the current balance due, whether the account is open, and the max balance.

Before you can do any transactions using a customer's account, you must open it.  You can do this by clicking the 'O' next to the Open Account Date field.  You may also want to set a max balance just to insure against your employees extending an unwanted amount of credit.  Be aware that setting the max balance to 0 indicates that it is unlimited.

In order to make payments or adjustments, go to the transactions tab.  You can see transactions made involving the account, as well as past payments and adjustments.

Employee Maintenance

The employee maintenance screen allows you to add cashiers and customize their permission levels, adding restrictions on what they can do within the software.  The employee maintenance screen is accessed from the login screen, before you enter your username and password.  It is in the tools menu.

Once you're in the maintenance screen, you can see two tabs - one for General, where you can add new cashiers, and one for permissions, where you can set what each cashier can do.

In order to add a cashier, hit the add button.  You are required to put in a unique two-character cashier id for each cashier you want to add.  You are also required to put in a password for this cashier - this can be up to seven characters long.  Optionally, you may link the employee to a customer number, in order to associate them with a name, address, and other details.

After adding a cashier, you should set up their permissions.  To do this, make certain on the general tab that the cashier for which you would like to set up permissions is selected. Then, click the permissions tab.  You will see a column of buttons, to allow you to select general categories of operations.

For each operation, you may select Yes, No, Prompt, or Override.  If the cashier is set to yes, they are allowed to do the operation.  If the cashier is set to no, they will get an error telling them that they do not have permission to do that.  If the cashier is set to prompt, they will get a prompt when they attempt that operation, allowing someone with override access or an administrator to enter their username and password to allow it.  If the cashier is set to override, they may do the operation and they may also allow enable someone who is prompted to do it.

For customers on an update plan, the most recent version of the software is 2.09.0000.

Support is ending for versions 2.05.0048 and older of ExtremePOS, Musicware, and Praiz on December 1st, 2010.  Get more information
