Look Forward
I want to share a story about an incredible young man named Lionel. Between having an absent father and a drug addicted mother, Lionel has had an incredibly difficult childhood and adolescence. As a young adult in relationships he used the kind of behavior he learned from his role models...that fear, threats, violence will result in greater control and respect. He was ordered to DAP after an abusive incident with an ex-girlfriend. Lionel came to my therapy group angry, disconnected and quiet. I'm happy to tell you that Lionel stayed with us for the full 24-weeks of men's therapy. The last night of group I always have the guys who are completing share words of wisdom with the others. He typed up the message below and shared it with the whole group. With his permission, I now share it with you. Click here to read Lionel's message. |

Reading Lesson
I know how to read.
I have a dictionary,
and I know what words mean.
So when the CNN banner
running across the TV screen
says that police are calling
this thing
"a domestic dispute"
a clear image comes to mind...

"I learned to be an expert..."
At DAP's 10th annual Transforming Families fundraising luncheon on October 18thguests will have the opportunity to view the brand new DAP video. One of the featured former clients in that video is Lindagail. Lindagail's story is powerful. It reminds us that the essence of abuse is not the blows themselves, but the patterns. The terror lies in the belief that no one can - or even wants to - help. That is the cycle DAP works to break. Click here to read Lindagail's story. |

Yoga. Women. Therapy. DAP has been awarded a Community Pilot grant to study the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating components of yoga into women's therapy services. The funding, from the National Institutes of Health through the University of Minnesota's Clinical and Translational Science Institute, supports the collaboration of University researchers with community services providers. A member of DAP's Board of Directors, Robin Lackner, explored the project in more detail in a recent blog post. Click here to read more. |
Sponsors of Change
We've grown accustomed to corporate sponsors. New Year's Day used to mean watching the Rose Bowl. Now that simple 8-letter name is something like: the ABC Corporation Rose Bowl, presented by XYZ Company, with support from Worldwide Widgets. DAP's Transforming Families luncheon has sponsors, too, but their role is much deeper.

DAP's luncheon sponsors are true partners in our work. Verizon and Success Computer Consulting have been partners with DAP for over nine years. In addition to ensuring that funds raised at the luncheon go directly to help families, the two companies have connected DAP to other caring businesses, donated valuable in-kind services and increased awareness of the work happening at DAP. As a new partner, AM950 and DAP will not only build a successful event but look forward to creating a public awareness campaign in the year to come.
These companies, including long-time supporters Dorsey & Whitney, REMAX Results (Marshall Saunders & John Collopy) and Cuningham Group, aren't seen by millions of tv-watching football fans. They work with DAP because they believe that families should be a safe haven. These are social-minded businesses that are aware and engaged in a collective effort to improve our community. |
