Orange County United Way released its Community Wide Needs Assessment: A Report for the Community from the Community at its annual press conference held at Morrison Hall at SUNY Orange. The report was commissioned in an effort to better fulfill the mission of Orange County United Way: "to make a measurable difference in people's lives by securing resources and developing relationships to build a stronger, more vibrant community". The Business Institute of SUNY New Paltz was commissioned to perform the work, and JP Morgan Chase and The Warwick Savings Foundation generously provided financial support. A volunteer steering committee was formed to assist in the work. The concept of this assessment was not to duplicate research conducted by others, but rather to extract the priority needs uncovered in recent studies, and to then identify the highest priorities among all of them. Eleven studies provided a baseline list of 14 needs in Orange County. Using surveys, focus groups and community leader interviews the identified needs in Orange County were prioritized. Three distinct priorities emerged as a result of this process. The highest priority was Affordable Health Care, followed by Helping Children and Youth Succeed, and Affordable Housing.

Children Flock To Orange County United Way's Touch-A-Truck Event |
|
Nearly 5,000 people turned out for Orange County United Way's Touch-A-Truck event, at the Orange County Government Center in Goshen on Sunday, June 1st, for the opportunity to think and play "outside the toy box." Children were able to touch, explore, and climb on all kinds of trucks and cars including race cars, fire trucks, tractor trailers, dump trucks and even a Sherman tank. In addition to getting up close and personal with vehicles of all shapes and sizes, attendees were able to enjoy tasty treats from local vendors, meet Smokey the Bear and bounce around in inflatable toys. Families were also able to create child ID cards, complete with fingerprints, photos and personal information, courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff's Office's Safe Child ID program. The first 1,000 children even received a special goodie bag. The hugely successful first time family fun event raised over $37,000 for Orange County United Way. "Touch-A-Truck was a tremendous success because of the many volunteers and organizations who donated their time, resources, and vehicles to bring this unique opportunity to the residents of Orange County. Everyone who attended, especially the children, seemed to really enjoy the experience and the money raised will be used to help residents in need, said John Checklick, President and Chief Professional Officer of Orange County United Way.

Local Resident Bequeaths a Portion of His Estate to Support Orange County United Way
Orange County United Way was named as a beneficiary of the estate of the late Richard C. Weyant of New Windsor. Richard Weyant was born in Newburgh in 1926 and was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a self-employed laborer who wished to give back to his community. He made a planned gift to Orange County United Way that will be used to help fund health and human service organizations that provide valuable services to local residents. His thoughtfulness will carry on his legacy of caring for years to come. The Orange County United Way, in preparation for its own future has established an endowment fund as a means to support the United Way's mission and to create a vehicle for future planned gifts to the organization. The Orange County United Way Endowment Fund in memory of Marion S. Murphy allows donors to make permanent gifts, both large and small, that will grow over time. Donors can make contributions of cash, securities, real estate, life insurance, retirement assets, or tangible assets. The ultimate goal of the fund is to generate annual income back to the United Way to help reduce its operating and administrative expenses so that more donor funds can be put back into the community. For more information about how to make a gift to the Orange County United Way Endowment Fund in memory of Marion S. Murphy, please contact Karen VanHouten at the Community Foundation of Orange County at (845) 769-9393, or Jessica Callihan at Orange County United Way at (845) 457-4774 x3104.
