Spring Appeal raises funds for student scholarships Suleima Rosario (L), Student Government vice president, and Ray Scarpa, DNP '08, president of the SN Alumni Association, were among the phone line volunteers. |
Thanks to the generosity of alumni like you, the School of
Nursing Alumni Association has been raising money for a new scholarship fund to
benefit UMDNJ nursing students. In its first-ever Spring Appeal, the
Association solicited contributions by mail in February and conducted
phonathons on March 16 and 25. "We are very pleased with campaign results so far," notes
Rita Smith, DNP' 08, co-chair of the 2010 fundraising campaign and treasurer of the Association. Smith is co-chairing the fundraising
campaign with Deborah Zastocki, DNP '08. "We received more than $3,000 in pledges for the Nursing
Education of Today and Tomorrow scholarship fund," Smith adds. We also were able to make updates to the SN alumni contact list." The spring appeal was coordinated by the Foundation of UMDNJ,
which raises money for all UMDNJ schools and programs. "Scholarships are
critically important to bringing new nurses into the field. We are counting on
everyone to fulfill their pledges and we welcome additional gifts at any time,"
says Martha L. Bahamon, development director at the Foundation. To learn more
about giving opportunities at the School of Nursing, please telephone Martha at
973-679-4685; or email mbahamon@njhf.org.

Alumni Notes from the Field
Fighting Kidney
Disease in Urban Communities
"As a NP with Fresenius Medical Care, West Orange, NJ, I
operate a chronic kidney disease clinic in collaboration with a group of
nephrologists. The program serves clients who are diagnosed with kidney disease
in stages 3-5. My team consists of a dietitian and a social worker and me. Our
goal is to slow or stop the progression of kidney disease and to address and
treat complications. We provide kidney disease education, including information
about diet. We conduct a monthly group program for our patients and also
conduct a monthly CKD seminar at a nearby community center. It's estimated that
26 million Americans may have kidney disease. The African American population is disproportionately affected. I want to make more of an impact with more
outreach programs--especially in the Newark area.

New Grad compares
Nursing School to "Real World"
I started working at my first job as a RN on March 9, 2010.
I was hired to work as a staff RN on the subacute wing at Medicenter, Red Bank,
NJ. Right now they're training me on the long-term and Alzheimer's units too in
case they ever need me to fill in. It's been a bit overwhelming but I'm getting
the hang of it. This is not like nursing school! On subacute I have up to 18
patients, and on long term I have up to 24! What a change from the FOUR
patients I had during level IV! I look forward to learning more and growing
into my new position as time goes by. It's great to finally be a working nurse!
Lauren Olcese-Mercurio, RN, BSN '10 (Newark)
