Tar River Reads: Our First Year |
Tar River Reads is a community wide reading program designed to inspire as many people as possible in the Twin Counties to read a selected book during a given period of time. During the month of September, we're encouraging community members to read A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines and to see the theater production at the new Booker T. Theater in downtown Rocky Mount.
A Lesson Before Dying, first published in 1993, is an Oprah's Book Club Selection. The Chicago Tribune said of it "This majestic, moving novel is an instant classic, a book that will be read, discussed and taught beyond the rest of our lives." Various community organizations, including Braswell Memorial Library, H.D. Cooley Library, and Nash Community College, are collaborating to make this "One Book, One Community" a successful start to what we hope will become an annual event in the Twin Counties.
Ways you can participate in Tar River Reads:
· Read the book! Braswell Memorial Library owns multiple copies, as well as three audio books, and two study/activity guides. NCLive gives you access to the Cliffs Notes for the book.
· Attend a lecture/discussion on A Lesson Before Dying at Braswell Memorial Library on Tuesday, September 6 or 27 at 6 pm. Dr. Vivienne Anderson from North Carolina Wesleyan College will speak about the book and facilitate a discussion of it on those two dates.
· See the production of the A Lesson Before Dying at the Booker T. Theater: September 16, 17, 23, 24, 25.
· Encourage friends, your book club, co-workers, and random strangers on the street to read the book.
· If you own a small business or manage a team of people, buy a copy of the book and share it with everyone.
· Join our Tar River Reads Facebook page to learn more about events and to access discussion guides and reading materials.

Community and Stakeholders
Set Priorities for
Braswell Memorial Library |
Using focus groups and surveys, and with the help of consultant Dr. Robert Burgin, Braswell Memorial Library conducted a long-range planning process during the first half of this year. A Library Services and Technology Act grant, provided by the federal government and administered through the State Library of North Carolina, funded this activity.
Given a list of eighteen common public library priorities and the opportunity to add other priorities, multiple focus groups and survey respondents identified what they consider to be the top service priorities for the library over the next five years. After drafting a plan based on those service priorities and submitting it to the public for comments, Library Director Jane Blackburn and consultant Dr. Robert Burgin presented the final plan to the Library's Board of Trustees at their August 10 meeting, where it was approved.
For the next five years, Braswell Memorial Library's service priorities will be
● PROMOTE READING AND LITERACY
● CONNECT PEOPLE TO THE ONLINE WORLD
● PROVIDE INFORMATION RESOURCES
● BE A DESIRED DESTINATION
The library's time, effort, and funding will be funneled toward these priorities. Seven goals have been formulated to give direction to fulfilling the priorities:
● Goal 1: Braswell Memorial Library will provide resources and programs that encourage lifelong reading and literacy for all ages.
● Goal 2: Braswell Memorial Library will provide the information technology infrastructure necessary to meet the online information needs of library users.
● Goal 3: Braswell Memorial Library will provide library users a variety of digital content and online resources.
● Goal 4: Braswell Memorial Library will provide library users with assistance in using the electronic resources provided by or through the library.
● Goal 5: Braswell Memorial Library will provide resources and programs that encourage lifelong learning for all ages.
● Goal 6: Braswell Memorial Library will provide K-12 resources and help using resources to enable this group to succeed in school.
● Goal 7: Braswell Memorial Library will provide children, teens, adults, and seniors with a safe and welcoming destination that offers opportunities to read, learn, succeed at work, and interact with their community.

Twin Counties Literacy Council | | A new community-based nonprofit organization, and a very welcome library partner, the Twin Counties Literacy Council has as its primary goal to assist adults who need help with reading. Anyone needing assistance in reading, or anyone interested in learning how to be a tutor, please call 877-398-5576 (toll free) or send an email to twnctylitcncl@aol.com. For now, tutoring sessions through this group are available at Braswell Memorial Library and at Mount Zion First Baptist Church.
Two classes of tutors have been trained so far and have been paired with adult learners. The Board of Directors of the Literacy Council is hard at work laying the groundwork for a strong organization. Interim officers are William Parker (Chair), Cephus Haynes (Vice-Chair), Nellie Lyons (Secretary), and Deborah Farmer (Treasurer). Dr. Bertha Haynes has been appointed Executive Director. The group is in the process of gaining 501c3 status as a non-profit agency so that serious fund raising can begin.

Braswell Memorial Library has been focusing more attention on our Young Adult program over the past several years. This summer for the first time we offered free tutoring for teens in the Foote PRINT (the teen area on the second floor). John Todd, an education major at ECU, provided tutoring services every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon for a six-week period. Mr. Todd, along with Derrick Flood, the Adult Information and Young Adults Services manager, reviewed reading, math, and science topics for a group of eight to twelve teens each session. The students seemed to enjoy the sessions and parents gave the program an "A." The group celebrated the last day with a pizza and board-game party.
By October of this year, the Library hopes to have a Teen Advisory Board in place. By January 2012 this advisory group should be actively engaged in helping the library to better serve the young adults in our area. Working with library staff from the Adult Information and Young Adult Services Department, this group will provide suggestions for library materials of interest to teens and for programs or speakers that would attract a teen audience. Other projects they may consider are establishing a YA book club, helping to organize and lead library tours for student groups, and volunteering to tutor their peers at the library on a wide range of subjects.
High school students planning to go to college should find joining the library's Teen Advisory Board a great addition to their college applications. Plus we'll do our best to make the work fun! |

The Library, SCORE, and
Local Nonprofits |
SCORE is a national non-profit organization with chapters all over the country, and at the national level has an ongoing initiative with The Office Depot Foundation "to assist nonprofits to build their capacity to serve their communities." Our local chapter, Upper Coastal Plain SCORE, and Braswell Memorial Library are now working together to bring this national initiative to our local community. The local chapter's office is at the library, and the library has worked with SCORE in the past to serve small business owners.
In the five county region that UPC SCORE serves, there are 1,986 registered exempt nonprofits. There are many nonprofits that are not registered, such as religious and community service groups, as well as people seeking help to set up a new nonprofit to serve their community.
While SCORE's work has focused on small businesses over the past four years, UCP SCORE has also been called on to assist some start-up and emerging nonprofit organizations, particularly on business issues. Some issues related to the operating of nonprofit organizations that SCORE can help with include: allowable and unallowable expenses, status and IRS filings, record keeping, business management issues, retaining exempt status, monitoring grants, and Board duties and responsibilities.
Keith Davis and Mark Frohman, SCORE counselors, believe that nonprofits are important to our local community because they provide a public benefit. As a result, the local chapter is partnering with Braswell Memorial Library to initiate a local campaign to promote SCORE services to nonprofits in our area.
Free public programs on how to start and operate a nonprofit will be offered monthly starting in September. These programs will be based on IRS publication 4221-PC Compliance Guide for 501(c)(3) Public Charities. Stakeholders in local nonprofit charities of all sorts are invited to come and learn more about what the government requires to obtain and maintain tax-exempt status.
Private and confidential one-on-one counseling is always available through SCORE. To set up an appointment, call 252-442-1173 and leave a message, or send an email to score@braswell-library.org |

More School Resources Than You Can Shake a Stick |
Braswell Memorial Library has something for every student, no matter their age or course of study.
For children and teens in the traditional progression of kindergarten through 12th grade, whether in public, private, or home schools, the library offers a multitude of resources to help with school work. We purchase materials based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study Curriculum. For students in post-secondary school, through the internet and Inter-Library Loan, help is available on a wide variety of subjects. For the life-long learner, what better place than the public library to indulge your interests?
● Two homework centers, one for elementary students (Kids College) and one for middle and high school students (Foote P.R.I.N.T), with both paper and electronic resources. These spaces were designed to be comfortable and fun spaces to attract children and teens and reward them for doing school work.
● Books, newspapers, magazines, books on CD, educational DVDs: everything is free to use in the building; books, books on CD, and DVDs may be checked out and taken home. Accelerated Reader books are labeled and easy to find.
● Staff assistance with finding materials or information.
● Brainfuse is a resource available through the library's website which provides HelpNow -- a comprehensive suite of online academic services designed to support many learning needs and styles. HelpNow provides unique services in each of three main categories -- expert instruction, self-study, and peer-to-peer collaboration.
● Tumble Book Library, offered through the library's website, is an online collection of TumbleBooks - animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.
● NC LIVE is North Carolina's statewide online library service, dedicated to providing North Carolinians with online library and information resources that support education, enhance statewide economic development, and increase quality of life. Designed for at-home use, NC LIVE eBooks, magazines, newspapers, journals, media, and other online materials are available to anyone with an internet connection and public library card. NC LIVE offers free electronic access to resources for all ages on topics ranging from careers, business, and investing, to auto repair, health, history, and genealogy.
● Programs throughout the year on fun (yet educational!) topics.
