Homework Centers on the Way . . .
Not Just One, but Two!
Braswell Memorial Library is in the throes of minor renovations. We're awaiting furniture, technology, and books for the upstairs Foote P.R.I.N.T., our homework center for middle and high schoolers. The walls are painted and the neon Foote PRINT sign is ready to plug in. We're planning a Grand Opening for Friday November 14th. Keep an eye out for more details! Work on the Kids' College Homework Center in the Children's Room on the first floor at the Library is finally underway. If you've been here lately and walked back to the Children's Room, you've seen the evidence of the reconfiguration project. Actually, what you've probably seen is lots of plastic sheeting hung from the ceiling! It's there to keep the dust and debris contained and away from our books and patrons. The central part of the room is blocked off completely as work continues, including the painting of a mural on the curved wall. Service points have been put in place on both sides of the room. The children's computers that were removed from the curved wall have been temporarily located on the second floor near the Information Services desk. We're sorry for any inconvenience but are sure that you will be very happy with the end product! We have a lot of work to complete before we can open this area. The opening is tentatively set for January 2009. |
| BML's Summer Reading 2008 Breaks All Records!
"Catch the Reading Bug" really caught on! |
|
Over 3,000 children and adults registered for summer reading at Braswell Memorial Library this summer - 3,240 to be exact. This number exceeded last year's total registration by over 300. Next year's plan to have a separate summer reading program for teens, in addition to the one for younger kids and the one for adults, should boost our record even higher. The library's summer programs, generally thematically related to the Summer Reading Program theme or at least to reading, tend to be our best-attended events. The Kick Off Party, held on the back lawn, has attracted over 2,500 participants each summer for the past couple of years. The free food and fun must be hard to resist. And our addition of incentives for adults to read has been well-received. Adults have a chance to get some pretty good stuff when they turn in their reading lists -- some of the prizes awarded this year included gift cards from Outback Steak House, Bailey's Fine Jewelry, and Golden East Mall. The library firmly believes in the value of reading. We're happy to think that children in our community read during the summer in part because of our Reading Program and the fun incentives it offers. We're happy to encourage adults to read as well. Join us next summer as we expand our program to reach all ages! |
| A Letter to Present and Future Friends of the Library
From Katherine Lucas, President of the Friends |
|
Dear Braswell Library Supporter:
With your help and support, the Friends of Braswell Memorial Public Library (FBMPL) achieved key milestones during 2007-2008.
- The FBMPL had its largest membership ever -- over 350 households and businesses were 07-08 Friends!
- Champagne & Chocolates was a stunning success and resulted in a major gift of $15,000 to Braswell Memorial Library. The FBMPL achieved official designation as a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization. This will increase donor opportunities in support of FBMPL as well as enable the Friends to apply for significant grants for the benefit of Braswell Memorial Library.
- The gift from the Friends was given in support of the two new homework centers which will be opening in the library late 2008 and early 2009.
The goal of the Friends of Braswell Memorial Public Library is simple, to assist Braswell Memorial Library in its quest to become the best library in the State of North Carolina! This fall, the Friends will be offering expanded membership opportunities through the new Friends of Braswell Memorial Public Library Acorn Society.
Please respond generously with your annual membership dues in support of the Friends of Braswell Memorial Public Library.
Sincerely,
Katherine Lucas
President, Friends of BMPL
P.S. - Please save the date now for two exciting Friends events!

ASK SCORE: Choosing Accounting Services Carefully |
As you launch or expand a business, keeping track of the money, preparing tax returns and performing other financial tasks can quickly become a burden. If you need more time to do other things, it might make sense to turn over tax, accounting and other financial chores to outside specialists. Choosing the right type of tax, accounting, bookkeeping or other financial help is an important decision. An outside accountant can be one of your most trusted business advisors and a key to your success. Although many business owners work with big national firms, most prefer to work with small independent firms or solo accounting professionals. Accounting services differ from bookkeeping services, however. An accounting firm prepares financial statements and tax returns based on the numbers that you give them via your own in-house books. Bookkeeping services, if offered, will be extra. If you plan to hire your own bookkeeper, make sure the person you choose is qualified. One way is to use the "Bookkeepers Hiring Test" available free from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers at their Web site, www.aipb.org. Before selecting a certified public accountant (CPA) or other financial pro, list the services you think you need, such as tax preparation, financial reports, balance sheets, invoicing, payroll services, general bookkeeping or someone to set up your books. Some firms may handle it all, or you may need to split the tasks. CPA Directory is a huge online listing of CPAs nationwide and can help you find an accountant in your area. The Web site also offers helpful advice on hiring and working effectively with a CPA. Visit www.cpadirectory.com. And don't forget about Enrolled Agents. EAs are licensed by the Federal government to prepare tax returns. They have either worked for the IRS or have passed a rigorous IRS exam. They are savvy tax experts, but generally don't have the degrees of CPAs and tend to charge less. Visit the National Association of Enrolled Agents Web site at www.naea.org. Fees vary greatly among accountants, from $50 per hour to $300 or more. Some firms will provide a specified list of services for a flat monthly fee, and may provide less costly help for bookkeeping and other tasks that don't require CPA-level training. If you are considering a larger accounting firm, find out which people you will be working with directly. Also try to match your general philosophy with a firm that is as conservative - or aggressive - as you are on tax matters. Accounting is just one critical issue facing your small business. To learn more, contact SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business" at (252) 442-1173 or score@braswell-library.org. SCORE is a nonprofit organization of volunteer business counselors who provide free, confidential business counseling and training workshops to small business owners.
