8 months and counting with no prescription antibiotics, anti-virals, anti-fungals, etc. I never imagined that I would finally be off of antibiotics and fingers crossed, it will be a year in the Fall. I continue to be quite optimistic, and yet, it hasn't been entirely smooth sailing.
Overall, I was feeling about 90% a few months ago with a much smaller list of pesky remaining symptoms than ever.
I then started to incorporate a new treatment into my protocol for KPU (more later) and am now feeling that I've stirred the pot somewhat and haven't felt quite as good as I had been previously. That said, I am still doing quite well overall.
I continue to learn from the combined experiences of many. I am grateful for the numerous people that I've met both in person and virtually as a result of this illness. It is through our common experience that we will find our way through...
Here's to your health!

Kryptopyrroluria
|
What is KPU and How Might It Be Involved in Chronic Lyme Disease?
Kryptopyrroluria (KPU) is a condition in which patients become zinc, B6, manganese, and omega-6 fatty acid deficient. As a result and in part, "their immune systems are like soldiers with guns without bullets", says Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD.
The condition has been known for decades and was originally identified working with schizophrenic patients around 1960. It has also been known to be a factor in many other illnesses such as bipolar disorders, depression, and even autism.
White spots in the fingernails and poor dream recall are two of the hallmark symptoms. Others include poor breakfast appetite, pale skin, cold hands or feet, eosinophilia, light and sound intolerance, tremors or shaking, poor short-term memory, and more.
For me personally, I've always had white spots in my fingernails and never remembered my dreams. Furthermore, I consistently had unexplained patters of high eosinophils in blood tests over many years. KPU may be another piece of the puzzle in my recovery.
Dr. Klinghardt has suggested that 80% of his chronic Lyme patients are now testing positive for this condition. Thus, it may make sense for many of us to have Kryptopyrrol testing performed to see if our treatment approaches should consider addressing KPU.
A word of caution - this is not an easy protocol. Once the protocol begins, heavy metals are often released and it takes a doctor skilled in addressing heavy metal detoxification to avoid worsening of symptoms. After this phase is addressed, the immune system often activates and the patient may experience symptoms of immune response to various microbes that it previously did not have the capacity to address. These may include fevers, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and others. Thus, I do NOT advocate treating for KPU without working with a well-trained doctor.
I've been on the protocol now for just over two months. Everything that I expected has been observed thus far in terms of feeling as though the pot has been stirred and some symptoms have re-emerged. It will take 2-4 more months to better ascertain the benefit of addressing this condition in terms of my overall health.

Garth Nicolson, PhD on "Mycoplasma - Often Overlooked in Chronic Lyme Disease"
My most recent article is a collaboration with Garth Nicolson, PhD.
In this article, Dr. Nicolson talks about a commonly overlooked aspect of chronic Lyme disease - Mycoplasma.
While the story of Mycoplasma is a chilling one, information is power and the more we understand about these complex illnesses, the better positioned we are to find our way through them.

Days Away From an Event Not to Be Missed!
From Roadblocks to Recovery is just days away. This is an event not to be missed for anyone dealing with Lyme disease, autism, or many other chronic illnesses based in infections and toxicity. It is difficult for me to even believe that the organizers were able to pull together such an impressive lineup. The LIA Foundation, in conjunction with CHOICE, is putting on their annual event June 25 - June 28, 2009 in Scottsdale, AZ. Some of the presenters include: - Ann Corson, MD - Lee Cowden, MD - Stephen Fry, MD - Garry Gordon, MD - Lawrence A. Klapow, PhD - Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD - Joe Mercola, DO - Anju Usman, MD This is an event not to be missed. So come join me at the From Roadblocks to Recovery event. I can't wait!

Cowden Condensed Support Program
|
Promising Changes to A Well-Known Lyme Treatment Program
The "Cowden Support Program" has been available for some time now. Recently, NutraMedix introduced the "Cowden Condensed Support Program".
Initial feedback on the condensed program sounds quite promising. For users, one significant benefit is that no longer does the program require eight daily dosings. It has now been reduced to only four. Thus, the new program is much easier for users to follow and remain compliant with.
It also costs less and is believed to be more effective than the original full program.
In terms of Lyme treatment options that address the many factors involved in the illness, I personally think this is one of the better options available.
It has considered issues such as infections, heavy metals and other toxins, adrenal support, hypercoagulation, and more.
More information on the new program can be found here.

What Now? What Next? |
What's Next In My Treatment Plan?
I continue to make adjustments to my treatment protocol as I learn and experience more. I use various forms of energetic testing to determine key problem areas and how to approach them.
I am still using the Bionic 880 as part of my treatment. I'm finding it to be a very helpful tool in managing infections. Though not a complete cure, I do believe that the instrument is a very key reason that I've now been off antibiotics for eight months and still doing well.
I have completed 5 rounds of Allergie-Immun therapy from Germany as well and am continuing with the program until no further energetic mispatternings are found. I believe that the AI drops have been a significant factor in helping to improve detoxification as well as to help address emotional factors of illness.
I continue to use Progurt, a human-strain probiotic product from Australia. Thus far, I am very optimistic about this product.
I've incorporated several plant stem cells to support my immune system, improve detoxification, and provide organ support. It's still early, but others have reported very good results with embryonic plant buds.
I'm on the Kryptopyrrol (KPU) protocol mentioned above. It's definitely a bit of a ride, but I am optimistic that the benefits will present themselves over the next several months. For more information on these options, visit my What Next page.
