Issue #23 Summer 2008
Summer is almost over and quite a bit has been happening on the Lyme front, both in general and with regard to my own treatment.

First, Under Our Skin was released to very positive reviews.  I am very excited that this film is now a resource that we can share with friends, family, and others to give them some insight into what many of us have experienced as a result of Lyme disease.

Second, Pam Weintraub's new book Cure Unknown was published.  Though I have not finished reading it yet, I do think it is another catalyst for change in the Lyme disease arena.  The more information that is known about the disease and the more people we reach, the better.

On the topic of my own treatment, many new doors have opened and new information has come to light over the past few months.

Scott using hotel lamp as IV poleFirst, I finally ended my seven month journey with IV antibiotics and had my PICC line removed in mid-August.  I cannot tell you how happy I am to have it out of my arm and to be able to return to some of my activities that I could not do with it.  Overall, I did not find that the IV therapy provided any significant improvement, but I am still glad that I gave it the effort.  Thank goodness I no longer have to use the floor lamp hoisted up onto the nightstand to do an IV at a hotel.

Second, at the urging of an ND that I am working with, I pursued additional evaluation for mold.  Find out more about what I learned below and how important this puzzle piece could be to many of us.

Third, I started a focus on detoxification from environmental toxins.  My lab scores were very high for many environmental toxins such as phlalates, xylene, benzene, toluene, and more.  I have incorporated an amino-acid based detoxification program to support removal of these harmful toxins.

Fourth, I introduced an injectable form of transfer factor that supports the body's ability to deal with the multitude of infections that many of us with chronic Lyme disease carry.

Next, I changed the focus of my heavy metal detoxification program from EDTA IV to both EDTA and DMSA suppositories.  I also introduced ACZ nano, a very unique liquid zeolite that further supports detoxification from metals and many other forms of toxins.

Finally, I have been watching the reports around an energetic form of treatment for Lyme disease called the Bionic 880.  This treatment has reportedly produced very good results for many.  I am planning a trip to Germany later this year to look into this modality further.  I am optimistic that this will be another powerful approach to regaining our health and wellness.

I am very excited about what the rest of the year holds.

It's Mold I'm Told
Another Important Piece of the Puzzle Identified

Several months ago, I started working with a new ND.  The ND was more like a private investigator and took the time to review years of my various lab tests.  One of her first recommendations was "Look at the mold issue.  There is a mold pattern in your labs that is likely causing many of your ongoing issues."

Well, I thought I had looked into this in the past as I had done some plate testing with nothing notable.  That said, I knew of four water intrusions in my current living space over the past nine years.

I also knew that I had an HLA type that was susceptible to both Lyme and mold biotoxins and that either could be enough to create ongoing illness.

I did the recommended ERMI evaluation from Mycometrics.  The report did show a high level of molds including Stachybotrys chartarum, better known as "black mold".

Once this information was in hand, I had a mold panel done through Esoterix.  The mold panel showed very high levels of antibodies to Aspergillus niger and Stachybotrys chartarum.

We now had all the data we needed to suggest that my current living environment was a danger to my health.

As a result, I am in the process of moving to a new location and am optimistic that this will convey some additional health benefits.  If only we had found this piece of the puzzle years ago.

My Recommendations:

1) Get the HLA test done and understand your risk factors for Lyme and mold biotoxins.  The test can be ordered from LabCorp code 012542.  Interpretation can be difficult but a helpful guide is provided in Ritchie Shoemaker's book "Mold Warriors".

2) Do the ERMI from either Mycometrics or Clean Air Labs.

3) Perform a mold antibody panel from Esoterix including Aspergillus species, Stachybotrys chartarum, Penicillium, and any other suspected molds or molds that appear in the ERMI.

I'd love to hear from you if you find this line of investigation proves fruitful.
The Latest on Klinghardt
Dietrich KlinghardtUpdates from the World of Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD

Dr. Klinghardt and faculty recently held their "Autism 2008" conference.  As many of you know, I personally contend that if we understand Autism, we can more readily address Lyme disease as many of the root causes of these illnesses have significant overlaps.  DVD highlights of this event are available for $50.  Additional information can be found here.

A superb presentation from the recent conference from Dr. Amy Derksen, ND can be found here.

Klinghardt Academy of Neurobiology now has a new web site.  Information about Dr. Klinghardt's approaches to treating chronic illnesses is available on the site.   Additional information can be found here.  An upcoming course listing can be found here.

A number of products that Dr. Klinghardt recommends are available through BioPure Healing Products.  BioPure Healing Products now has an online store.
LIA Foundation Conference
