UMCOR ASSESSES IRENE'S TOLL

Church members should not assume that
relief efforts are not needed, says Hazelwood

(UMNS) From North Carolina to New England, Hurricane Irene sparked evacuations by the hundreds of thousands, swamped shoreline communities and inland river towns, and cut electric power to nearly 6 million people. At least 38 deaths in nine states were blamed on the storm.

By Aug. 29, the United Methodist Committee on Relief was already processing initial $10,000 grant requests for the New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Great New Jersey Conferences. In North Carolina, relief efforts are well underway. The North Carolina Conference has mobilized training emergency-response teams to help recovery efforts in the Outer Banks and remote Hyde County on the state's eastern coast.

New column!

Apportionment giving is up seven percent over last year and two districts have 100 percent of paying churches ... Two ministry grant applications are due by the end of today, but the evangelism grant deadline has been extended until Oct. 15 ... And a quick report on Holston's ministry in Sudan.
Calling All Men

"Who are you?" (and
don't tell me about your job)

"Calling All Men," Holston's annual gathering for guys, was held Aug. 20 and 27 in two different locations, logging a total attendance of 369. All 12 districts were represented.
After a morning of workshops and boxed lunches, Bishop James Swanson called on men to praise God by figuring out who God created them to be. "God will never be disappointed if you don't score the winning touchdown if he created you to be a lineman."

clergywomen meet with Swanson 8-30-11
Why do we have to work harder to get men into the church?

Scattered among the participants at "Calling All Men" was a handful of clergywomen who had accompanied their male parishioners. Bishop James Swanson spent an hour with these pastors to talk about why some men don't want to go to church (see photo). In his blog, "Soaring," Swanson explains why male parishioners are so important. Also on this page: Swanson's upcoming appearances and an opportunity  to respond to him.
