Church leaders discuss groundbreaking report that calls out shrinking, aging denomination
About 70 Holston leaders gathered at Cokesbury Center in Knoxville to watch a web cast with thousands of other United Methodists and discuss bold changes to get the denomination back into the disciple-making business.
The Leadership Summit on April 6 was a response to the "Call to Action" report that states the status quo of a shrinking and and aging denomination is "toxic" and unsustainable. In short, the report said the denomination needs to change how it uses resources and invest more in fostering thriving local congregations.

New pool for Buffalo Mountain

'Cold creek stigma' is gone, says Director Jason Onks
The 50-year-old pool at Buffalo Mountain Camp, sealed in the memories of hundreds of campers, will soon be replaced by a modern pool more than three times larger.
"The old pool leaked so much [8,000 gallons per day] we had to put creek water in it," Onks said. "Our well could not keep up with the leak and still serve the rest of camp." Read the story ...

Church secretaries, unite

Holston hosts national meeting in Alcoa About 200 church secretaries from 34 states gathered for the annual meeting of the Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries at the Hilton near McGhee-Tyson Airport last weekend.
Bishop James Swanson welcomed them to Holston Conference and asked, "How many of you would have believed that you could come to a beautiful place like this and the church would pay for you to come?"
