Buyers rush to beat tax credit deadline
Real estate professionals report that first-time home buyers are flooding the sale market, pressed to finalize a deal before the federal government's $8,000 tax credit offer expires on Nov. 30.
Because mortgage approvals, residential inspections, and other steps in the buying process typically take about two months, buyers hoping to take advantage of the incentive will need to have a contract by the end of September.
The new flurry of activity now as house-hunters try to meet the deadline is triggering bidding wars and energizing the property market, which historically is slow at the end of summer. As a result, more homes are getting their full asking price.

Supino Pizzeria in Detroit ranks No. 1
Sylvia Rector | Free Press Restaurant Critic
Metro Detroit will always love its thick, square, Sicilian-style pizzas, but here as across the country, tastes are turning to lighter, more modern styles. The deceptively simple pies at Supino Pizzeria in Detroit's Eastern Market do more than follow the trend. They help define it. Click here to read the entire article. |

Group aims for 15,000 young professionals in Midtown area by 2015
Sherri Begin Welch | Crain's Detroit Business
If 15 by 15, a coordinated effort by the three anchor employers in Detroit's Midtown area to bring 15,000 young, educated people to greater downtown by 2015, is successful, it could become a national model. The effort is the first nationally to put a stake in the ground and set some measurable markers around its goal to attract young people, and it is one of the first such efforts with anchor institutions working collaboratively, according to the Chicago-based nonprofit CEOs for Cities. Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System and the Detroit Medical Center in May began meeting to explore ways they could work together to spur more development in Midtown to make it a place young people find attractive. Joining them at the table is the Detroit-based Hudson-Webber Foundation, the impetus for the effort and an investor in Midtown for more than 20 years.
