    Downtown to get new grocery store

    A full-service grocery store plans to open in March at The Shops at Lafayette Park in downtown Detroit, another step towards making living in the city more attractive.

    First Commercial Realty & Development Co. Inc., the Southfield-based owner of the development, said today it has finalized a lease with Downtown Foodland, an independent grocer.

    It is not associated with other Foodland stores, said Beverly Lyons, a spokeswoman for First Commercial. Nearby residents had told the developer they wanted a grocery store, she added.

    With the addition of the 14,000-square-foot grocery store, The Shops at Lafayette Park will be fully leased. It had reopened in November 2004 after a remodeling
