bulbs
Have you ever planted two or three tulips and then been disappointed by the results after they bloomed? It's a common problem, mostly because bulbs look best planted in groups and clusters of five or more (generally more).

To achieve a "mini-Holland" effect in your yard, we  recommend you plant clusters of different types, colors, heights and blooms.

Bulbs are available now at all Sloat Garden Center locations except our Danville, San Rafael and Pierce St (SF) stores. Learn more about planting bulbs here.

garden design
If you're thinking about ways to improve your garden space, call the Sloat Garden Center Design Department. We can develop simple, success oriented low maintenance planting plans for gardens, decks, and terraces, as well as provide indoor plant consultations. But most importantly, we can help you brainstorm ideas and solutions.

Problem solving is a large part of what we do. We will come up with a garden design that works with existing plant material and takes into account your available time to garden. Then we put together a planting plan that works for you. We develop a loose "bubble diagram" and a complete plant list with the quantities and sizes of plant material, soil requirements, and pruning, feeding and care information.

Our planting plans can be easily followed by every level of gardener; whether you prefer to do it yourself or have a professional install your plants.

To schedule an appointment, call us at 415-388-3754 or email us: design@sloatgardens.com

Autumn decoration time is here...We have
all sizes of carving pumpkins, specialty pumpkins, mini-pumpkins, corn stalks, gourds and colorful fall flowers in our stores.

Reminder: California enjoys a "second spring" during the months of October and November. This is the best time of
year to get perennials, trees, vines, shrubs and cool season vegetables into the ground

Fall Gardener's Notebook gardenguru

Our October Plant Pick gardenguru
croton Croton
October is the perfect time to talk about houseplants and the Croton (Codiaeum) matches the fall season with its fabulous foliage. Plants can be kept outside when temperatures are still warm but need to be brought indoors once evening temperatures drop. Foliage comes in a variety of shapes with colors ranging from green to yellow, red, orange, bronze and purple

What a Croton wants: warmth, humidity and moist soil. If the air in your home is dry, provide a saucer larger than needed filled with pebbles to set your pot on. Leaf color is most vibrant in high light. If new leaves seem more green, move your plant
to a brighter location.

Dear Garden Guru,

Can you recommend a list of fog/Mediterranean climate tolerant herbs, fruits, veggies, and flowers (which attracts bees and humming birds)? Any guidance will be much appreciated.

Thank you,
