Plant Pick of the Month
For February, we like the myriad of perennial Euphorbias that bloom in great clusters of chartreuse yellow and green bracts. Foliage colors are grey, burgundy, blue, and even variegated so they will add interest and depth to an otherwise green palette. They work in a wide range of landscapes from coastal succulent themes to cottage gardens. Sun is the preferred exposure, but they will thrive as well in shadier spots. They prefer average water but will withstand drought. They do not require regular fertilizing (which makes them appropriate for planting with other phosphorous eschewing Mediterraneans such as Grevillea, Protea, and Leucodendron).

Garden Guru: February
This month we discuss: 1. Getting ready to garden this spring ... what to do first? 2. Taking care of an apple tree 3. Growing Meyer Lemons in SF
Dear Garden Guru, I have raised bed gardens (8X4)for flowers and vegetables. What should I do to prepare the beds after this winter and one growing season behind me? Should I rotate the crops? Beets, cucumber, carrots and tomatoes were very successful. Can I start planting now and what should I plant each season? Thanks, - Heather in Emeryville
