Dear Friends, As you read on, you will see that we are serious about offering a platform where young performing and visual artists can develop and showcase their talents! These events are made possible by the generous support we have received from the greater Austin community. We are also pleasantly surprised that our website gets as many as 700 hits per day from places as far away as Singapore! Austin is ripe for The Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and we expect to generate more excitement as we continue to unveil new programs! With that said, we'd like to welcome aboard Kelley Glover who will be teaching World Music Drumming. Students will learn African and Afro Latino drumming patterns and techniques, intricate polyrythms in various meters, rhythmic and melodic improvisation along with the history and geography of African and Caribbean countries and their influence on music forms such as pop, jazz, hip, and R&B. Kelley Glover is also the creator, co-producer, writer, and composer of a premier music literacy show called, "U BETTER Sing!" which airs as a web show for KLRU Austin late 2009. ASPVA is a proud sponsor and supporter of "U BETTER Sing!" and our students will have the opportunity to work on the show both in front of and behind the camera. Kelley earned her Bachelor of Music Education from Howard University with a voice minor, and a Master of Arts from the Eastman School of Music with an emphasis in ethnomusicology. Kelley is a professional singer who has performed onstage with Denzel Washington, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Rait, Ruthie Foster, and Kris Kristoffersen among others. She studied voice with Grammy Award singer/songwriter, Jon Secada, and the Metropolitan Opera Mezzo Soprano, Hilda Harris.
We also wish to introduce our new treasurer, Ane Urquiola, a Private Banking Officer for Frost National Bank. Prior to joining Frost National Bank, she was a Financial Advisor for Amerprise Financial responsible for providing financial planning solutions to her clients. Ane is also a General Securities Representative with Financial Industry Regulatory Authority licenses Series 7 and Series 66 and Group 1 licensed Insurance Agent. Ane is a graduate of The University of Texas where she earned a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Finance and Accounting. Having grown-up among artists in her family, one of whom was friends with Picasso, Ane's very passionate about painting. We appreciate her volunteerism and dedication to arts education! We'd also like to thank our newest sponsor, Launch 787 , founded in March 2009 by the original Founder and Publisher of Austin's own RARE Magazine, Matt Swinney. Launch787 exists solely to produce unique, interesting, out-of-the-box events that become the talk of the town. We appreciate their enthusiasm and support of ASPVA! Man, this town rocks!
Happy day, Carol de Cardenas ASPVA Founder and Executive Director

Registration for YouthCast Talent Search Begins Today! |
This season's talent search will take place during the month of October, and interested students of all ages may submit their entry on-line or attend a live casting call at the Hill Country Galleria Amphitheater on Sunday, October 18. Contestants will also be invited to compete by talent scouts who will visit school performances, poetry slams, and other performance events in the greater Austin community. Requests for our talent scouts to attend additional performance events will also be considered. If selected, contestants will compete at The Long Center for the Performing Arts, and meet personally with a panel of industry professionals who will provide immediate feedback. ASPVA's YouthCast Choice Awards will be presented to winners in each genre, and the overall winner with the highest score will be presented with the ASPVA Cup (same idea as the NHL's Stanley Cup)! The overall winner will also receive a special prize package to help celebrate and promote their career. Historically, YouthCast winners have been invited to participate in many exciting performance opportunities including the kick off for this year's "Get Your Art On" sponsored by Austin Circle of Theaters, Art City Austin, First Night Austin, a benefit concert with Teens4Autism at the Austin Music Hall, and the Downtown Austin Alliance and KUT Annual Holiday Stroll and Tree Lighting Ceremony. Students have also been invited to dance for NICKELODEON, to compete in FAME contest, and to be a part of the feature film BANDSLAM. We expect similar opportunities for this season's winners.

ASPVA Launches Art Series for Girls Scouts! |
Raise your hand if you've ever been a Girl Scout! If so, you'd be as excited as former Girl Scout and ASPVA Founder, Carol de Cardenas, to have a patch specially designed for 21,000 girls in the Central Texas Council to earn for participating in the ASPVA Art Series as part of their Possibilities program! Classes include "Done in a Day Masterpiece Art Class" where students will create a wall-worthy, masterpiece acrylic on canvas in the manner of the French impressionist in just one day under the expert instruction of Nancy Hoover, professional artist and teacher whose work has been published in the Smithsonian. Randall Marks will offer a class focusing on fundamentals of ballet as explored through barre exercises, center floor work, and traveling movement while teaching an appreciation for classical ballet. Mr. Marks trained at the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, the Tidewater Ballet, and on full scholarship with Joffrey Ballet. He was a member of the New York City Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company and with New York City's Dennis Wayne Dance Company. Other art series classes include "Shakespeare's Broadway", "Strum, Strum, Strum!", and more.

ASPVA Award Winner, Georgia Napolitano, Makes it to FAME Final Competition |
|
" A happy state of shock overtook 17-year-old Georgia Napolitano from Austin, who was crowned the winner of the Fame National Talent Search at Six Flags Over Texas. She kept repeating, "I can't believe it," and promised to wear better shoes to the finals, as that was the judges' only criticism of her. Georgia will move on with six other finalists chosen from other Six Flags locations, to compete in the final competition September 5. After 10 impressive performances that kept the audience cheering and applauding, the judges left the stage to deliberate and Naturi Naughton, star of the remake of the movie FAME, came out to wow the crowd by singing the well-known title song. The judges returned with an envelope containing the finalist's name and a giant mock ticket to the finals to present to him or her. A shocked Georgia was picked for wowing the audience with her rendition of Fallin' by Alicia Keys," as reported by Pegasus News.
Congratulations Georgia, and good luck in the finals! We are very proud of you!
