Late summer camping quiet and cooler

Fresh air and sunshine calls visitors to leave creature comforts by the wayside and get back to the natural outdoors. Late summer camping offers a cooler and less hectic stay. Many schools are back in session, the temps tend to be cooler and fewer pesky bugs.

Southeast South Dakota parks and campgrounds are waiting for you. . .  MORE

NEW Water Attraction

We are finally settling Gavins Point Daminto summer after a cool wet spring and then threats of flooding.

Water releases from Gavins Point Dam west of Yankton have caused flooding to low lying areas along the Missouri River.

The river flow below the dam has become a raging river with no water access allowed at this time. The dam is operating at record release levels and has become a huge attraction for visitors to the Lewis & Clark Visitor Center overlooking Gavins Point Dam. Come and see this water show of historic magnitude.

Lewis & Clark Lake above Gavin's Point Dam is as beautiful and serene as ever, for boating, swimming, fishing and sailing. Speaking of sailing, be sure to check out the Bash to the Colonies Sailboat Regatta, coming August 26-28.

Have you requested your 2011 vacation planning packet? Whether you're planning a vacation for a week or just a weekend, you'll find lots of great ideas in the packet or view our magazines on line.

Bash To The Colonies Sailboat Regatta

August 26-28       Lewis & Clark Lake - YanktonBash - Red sailboat

Bash to the Colonies Sailboat Regatta is a "friendly competition" between sailing enthusiasts. Trophies are awarded but the event is not a hardcore race. It has developed into a weekend of sailing, fun, food, music, and entertainment. All proceeds go to Special Olympics South Dakota to help those with handicaps.
All types of boats get on the Lewis and Clark Lake to watch the race, tag along with the race, and to simply enjoy the water for the weekend. There are many fun and exciting things to do throughout the weekend.
