Change In The Air The new year brings many changes beginning with a new Governor, Dennis Daugaard, and new tourism secretary, Jim Hagen (See the press release below). The 2011 legislature brings some new faces and new legislation. We will be watching closely as tourism funding is discussed... a key issue to watch and communicate with your local legislators about. SSDTA has some changes of our own with a new branding effort. Out with the old and in with the new. We are letting go of our "Off the Beaten Path" brand and beginning new with "Simply South Dakota." Our regional publication will reflect a new feel of a real South Dakota experience, it's great faces and great places of the most diverse area of the state. We will highlight the outdoors from hunting/fishing to prairie sunsets, family friendly attractions, unique shopping, small town main streets to big city night life and cultural and heritage festivals. The new year starts in tourism with the annual Tourism Conference January 19-20 in Pierre. Hope to see many of our members and tourism friends at the conference. Wishing you all a very prosperous 2011. - Jacquie, Executive Director

| Jim Hagen Secretary of Tourism | GOV.-ELECT DAUGAARD APPOINTS JIM HAGEN SECRETARY OF TOURISM PIERRE, S.D. - Gov.-elect Dennis Daugaard announced today that he will appoint Jim Hagen to serve as South Dakota Secretary of Tourism. Currently, the tourism chief is a director within the Department of Tourism and State Development. Daugaard has announced that he will create a stand-alone Department of Tourism within his cabinet. The new department will also include the South Dakota Arts Council and State Historical Society. "Jim's work at Crazy Horse Memorial and his experience in state government make him an ideal choice to lead the Department of Tourism," Gov.-elect Daugaard said. "I am elevating Tourism to Cabinet-level because the visitor industry is such an important driver of South Dakota's economy. I know Jim will be a strong advocate for the industry and a leader in our efforts to attract more visitors to our great state." "I am honored to be asked by Gov.-elect Daugaard to serve the people of South Dakota as Secretary of Tourism," Hagen said. "I have a great appreciation for the tremendous impact the tourism industry has on our economy, generating millions of dollars and creating thousands of jobs. As secretary, I will work with our partners throughout the state to carry out the Governor's vision of taking the visitor industry to new and greater heights." Hagen, a native of Aberdeen and Sisseton, worked from 2006-2009 as National Campaign Director and Development and Public Relations Director for the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. Prior to that role, Hagen served from 2004-2006 in the Gov. Mike Rounds Administration as Secretary of Tourism and State Development, overseeing the Division of Tourism as well as divisions dealing with economic development and tribal relations. During the Gov. Bill Janklow Administration, Hagen served at various times as Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Special Advisor to the Governor. In those roles, Hagen served as the Governor's day-to-day liaison with the Department of Tourism. Hagen also worked as Campaign Manager for Janklow for Governor in 1998, Janklow for Congress in 2002, and Knudson for Governor in 2010. -30-
