Government You Can Believe In

My first eight months as your Auditor have been very productive, and I want get back to my regular newsletter so you can see the progress being made. I'll provide regular insights about the Auditor's Office, as well as some political updates.

In the 2010 Primary Election, we predict a 37.07% turnout.  We expect 44.00% Vote-By-Mail voters to participate, but only 6.00% of poll voters.  Vote by August 17, 2010.  If you vote at the polls, please GO to the polls.

Sincerely,

No Primary for the Auditor in 2010
NoPrimaryMy phone is ringing off this hook.  "Why can't I find you on the ballot?  You're not in the Voter Pamphlet either!"  No worries.  The Auditor's race appears in the Nov. 2 General Election.  There is no Primary election for this race.

State law requires nonpartisan candidates to skip the Primary and advance directly to the General Election ballot if only one or two candidates file.  Only when three or more candidates file is a Primary Election necessary.  That is why the Pierce County Auditor will NOT appear in the Primary.

And that is why the Pierce County Prosecutor's race does appear in the Primary.  Only one opponent filed against Mark Lindquist.  But, since the Prosecutor is a partisan seat, it will appear in both the Primary and the General Elections. In fact, in partisan offices even if there is NO contest, two elections are held for the single candidate and he or she will appear on the Primary ballot as well as the General ballot.

Running two elections for these partisan seats that only draw one or two candidates is a tremendous and unnecessary expense for taxpayers. I'm joining with auditors around the state to get this law changed and save the public's money.

Assisting Returning Military Personnel
MilitaryDid you know that 17,000 soldiers and airmen will return to Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) this summer?  And many dependents will join them.  A good portion of these folks will stay in Pierce County.  After a long deployment, they will need basic services to reorganize their lives.
  • Their vehicle registrations have expired and they need new tabs.
  • Those who are leaving the military will need to record their discharge papers.
  • Some will have to turn in their red or black diplomatic passports and now need a new, blue tourism passport.
  • Many will tie the knot and get married.
  • Some will settle permanently in the beautiful Northwest and buy a home.
  • And those who choose Pierce County will want to change their voter registration!
That means thousands of members of the military will need the services of the Pierce County Auditor.  And we're ready!  I met with JBLM staff to coordinate the services that our service men and women will need.
Pierce Voters get MORE
VotersWhen we heard that the state chose not to publish a Statewide Primary Voters' Pamphlet, we were very concerned.  The Voters' Pamphlet is a critical resource. How can you make the best decisions if you don't have information on all of the candidates and issues?

We provided you what the state would not.  Our Pierce County Voters' Pamphlet has it all. If it's on your ballot, you'll find it in this pamphlet. If we had not done this, you would have missed information for 90 federal and state candidates.
