A Government You Can Believe In

Dear friend,

Thanks for staying in touch.

I always look forward to your insightful questions regarding my stance on tough issues like the proposed street levy, and how the recession is affecting Tacoma.

Please feel free to let me know how you've been doing, and what issues you think I should be aware of.
The Street Levy: Pros and Cons

Decades of underinvestment in our city's infrastructure has earned us the infamous title of "Pothole City."

This label undermines our image as a safe, attractive and cutting-edge economic hub - an image that we need to continue attracting new businesses and investment.

But our ability to address short and long-term needs is limited by today's budgetary constraints and the financial hole we (and every other municipal government in the country) find ourselves in.

The issue is as complex as it is serious. Click here to read my take on the City Manager's proposed street levy (about a 12% property tax increase).
Tacoma's Recession

It's not new news that the country is in a full-blown economic recession. But every state and city experiences the effects differently. We each have our own, personal recession.

So what is Tacoma's recession?  Click here for a closer look.

Thank you for your encouraging words about my run for Pierce County Auditor in November 2009.  Many of you have asked how you can help. I need financial contributions and volunteers to assist with doorbelling. I cannot afford to get complacent: your help is necessary, and greatly appreciated!

Any amount is helpful.

$800 (maximum contribution) pays for postcards mailed to 2,700 targeted voters.
$100 covers the cost of a meet & greet for 70 donors.
$50 purchases 15 yard signs, a 1% contribution toward our goal of 1,500 signs.

Whatever your donation limits, you have a vital role to play in this election!
Tacoma's recession will likely last through mid-2009 - and we don't expect to see measurable recovery until 2010.  Although we are in good shape compared neighboring jurisdictions, our city budget will be stretched to its limits.

As always, I want to hear from you. My door is always open, whether it's about City of Tacoma business or issues you think I should address as your next Pierce County Auditor.   Thank you for keeping in touch.

Best regards,

Julie
