A Government You Can Believe In

Dear friend,

It's time to put our heads together and make some tough decisions for our community. Next month, the City of Tacoma will make cuts to its biennial budget. This is also the time of year when the City Council evaluates the City Manager's performance.

In both cases, citizen input is vital. Contact me with any thoughts or questions you may have regarding either issue.

I sincerely enjoyed your comments on my last issue. And you had lots to say about budget priorities, too! Click here to see a sample of reader comments.

Our Shared Sacrifice

Last month, I asked to hear about YOUR budget priorities. Thanks for responding. A government can only define its priorities with the help of its people - and Tacoma deserves a citizen-driven budget.

Now, we are poised to take action. This is not a painless budget adjustment. Our proposed cuts amount to $11,745,163, and may increase over the next year if the economy does not improve in that time. So far, it looks as though Tacoma can avoid layoffs and avoid service reductions.

Read more about the proposed budget cuts. I need to hear from you, so I can bring your voice to the table.
Ensuring Accountability

It's that time again. While our City Manager is not elected by the people, his tenure is directly linked to citizen satisfaction.

Each City Council member will be submitting their evaluation of the City Manager's performance by early June. I have my own opinions about the City Manager's performance and areas for improvement. But I think it's important to let YOU into this process, too.

Please contact your local councilmember from your district, as well as your three at-large representatives, Julie Anderson, Marilyn Strickland and Mike Lonergan.

Thanks for staying in touch. Please keep me informed of good news, as well as issues. In the next issue, I will make an important, personal announcement. Stay tuned.
