Greetings!

TOP 6 Reasons to Practice Bikram Yoga in the Summer...

1.  When you first walk into the yoga room, it actually feels cooler than outside!  Piece of cake!

2. When you leave the yoga room, the outside feels cooler than inside! So you are getting best of both worlds!  Bikram Yoga makes the summer more manageable!

3.  The relentless heat of AZ summers can leave you feeling sluggish.  Every time you take class you fill your "gas tank" by hyper-oxygenating the nerves and blood vessels in your body.

4. Your body is more warmed up before class.  Muscles are more relaxed in the heat.  In the afternoon classes especially, you may find that you are more flexible and go deeper in the postures since your body had all day to warm up.

5.  Cool off and wash your yoga mat in the pool after class!  Yoga mats should be cleaned after every class. Use mild soap and water and/ or spray down with water and tea tree oil, a natural disinfectant.

6.  You will look and feel more confident in your skin, and of course your swimsuit!

Don't forget to go with the flow: replenish your body with water and electrolytes (details below)

Testimonial- Celebrating a Milestone!
By Linda Olson

Linda O

A few weeks ago, I celebrated an important anniversary.  No, it wasn't a marriage anniversary.  As of June 29th, I having been practicing Bikram Yoga for 5 years!

I started going 5 years ago because it was the closest yoga studio to my home.  There was a problem though.   Bikram is the craziest yoga; it is hot yoga.  I already lived in a desert, and I wasn't sure I wanted to spend an hour and a half in a sweaty yoga studio stretching in 105 degree heat!

One day, before a shopping trip at the grocery store, I decided to walk in and see how hot it was.  It was about 15 minutes before a class started, so they let me go in.  As I stood in the room, a couple of students told me I HAD to come.  So I did.  I rushed home, put on shorts and a t-shirt and went back.  I've NEVER sweated like that in my life!  I struggled with balance.  I struggled to bend and stretch my body into the posses.  I struggled to breathe!  But I never left the room, which was the only goal the instructor gave me that day.  I waddled out of that room exhausted and sore, but changed.  My life took a new direction that day.

Bikram is now an important part my life.  I practice 2-3 times a week.  It has given me several physical gifts over the last 5 years:

  • blessed relief from arthritis pain
  • increased range of motion
  • muscle strength
  • better posture
  • balance
  • improved lung capacity

These gifts didn't surprise me.  I worked for them!  What did surprise me were the emotional and spiritual gifts that this practice gives:

  • improved balance with my emotions
  • an ability to let go of what is not so important more often
  • increased focus on what is important
  • a new understanding of energy and where it comes from
  • appreciation for breath, life
  • an expanding understanding of God
  • being able to notice and live in the present more often

I'm a woman who is a daughter, sister, wife, mom, teacher, friend, Christian.  Adding yoga to my life has been the best blessing in the last 5 years because it has impacted all these different aspects of my life.  It has helped me feel better about myself-physically, mentally, spiritually.

Happy anniversary to me!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Go with the flow: replenish your body with water and electrolytes!

Where should you start?  As a baseline, you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces.  That means, if you weigh 150 lbs you should be drinking at least 75 ounces (or 2.2 liters).  The more time you spend outside and the more exercise you do, the more water you need to drink. During the summer here in this arid climate of ours, you may need to drink as much as your total body weight in ounces per day. That means a 150 lbs person may need to drink 150 ounces or 4.5 liters of water.

Water is not the only important element to hydration.  When you sweat you lose not only water, but also salts.  When you sweat as much as we sweat, getting the proper balance of salts through diet alone becomes tricky.  Thankfully, there are many different products to suit your taste and life style that will replenish your body's electrolytes. Coconut water, such as VitaCoco, is a fantastic (and tasty) post yoga drink.  Other options include ReCharge and Vitamin Water as well as SmartWater, which supplements electrolytes without the sugar boost.  For a more economical approach, try PowerPak or EmergenC packets or Nuun tablets.  For extra heavy sweaters, you may consider taking electrolyte supplements in pill form.

If you are on any medication, check the literature for information on how it may affect your hydration and electrolyte imbalance.  Some medications, such as many of those prescribed for mood disorders, elevate the salt content in your urine .  Others, such as some birth control pills, may cause you to retain certain salts such as potassium.  In this case you should be aware not to overdose on that particular supplement.  Always be conscious of the way any medication is affecting your body so that you can anticipate and account for the effects.

To clarify, be sure you are drinking water and not just sports drinks, sodas, tea and coffee.  Anything with caffeine will dehydrate your body, so you must drink extra water to account for this.  For example, if you drink 8 oz of coffee a day, you should drink 24 oz of water to rehydrate yourself.
