| Greetings!
Happy New Year! Cheers to a fresh start and new beginnings! Have you made your New Year's Resolution yet? The New York Times mentioned some helpful resolution insight recently. Reinforce your WILLPOWER! "Based on studies of past resolutions, here are some uplifting predictions: 1) Whatever you hope for this year--to loose weight, to exercise more, to spend less money--you're much more likely to make improvements than someone who hasn't made a formal resolution. 2) If you can make it through the rest of January, you have a good chance of lasting a lot longer. 3) With a few relatively painless strategies and new digital tools, you can significantly boost your odds of success." Here are a few New Year's resolutions from the teachers and staff of Bikram Yoga Tempe: " To put myself first. Take care of me, because if I am doing what I need to be doing then everything else will fall into place." - Reba"To practice self compassion." -Zonya "To cook 4 nights a week dinner, preferably a balanced meal :)." -Jackie "To answer my phone and return voice mails in a timely fashion. With Facebook, text, email, etc, I have lost the simply pleasure of hearing someone's voice." - Charles "I do not usually make New Years Resolutions, but this year I do have one. Be kind to myself. Be patient, compassionate and have faith in my own being." -Tricia "My resolution is to replace fear with FAITH!" -Keri "To plan more 'me time' amidst my very busy schedule and to reinforce my willpower!" -Elaina "To find Happiness in every day, take risks, and staying committed to creating my life."-Karla

Testimonial By Josh Dent
I recently undertook in a life-changing mission entitled the 60 Day Bikram Yoga challenge. I had practiced Bikram yoga before in the past for a few brief periods of time with limited success. However, I fully understood roughly 14 days or so into the challenge that making the commitment to do it every day was going to make a world of difference. The amazing part is how these physical progressions help you overcome what seem to be the most insurmountable obstacles in your own life. I came into the challenge after going through a very rough 2011. The past year brought on what at the time seemed to be every bit of destruction possible. However, this Bikram yoga practice has assisted me in understanding everything that happened was all just a normal part of life. I am able to see the past year as just one giant learning experience that has only helped me be an even stronger person. There were two more major issues that I had been struggling with. Neck and back pain had just become a part of my every day existence. A painful spine can literally wreak havoc on your own life without you even being able to realize it. I just accepted the fact that everyday I woke up I would feel like somebody was punching me in the back. I also realize now that I had a very limited connection with myself. It is absolutely mind-blowing what lying on a mat in a 105 degree room with sweat blasting every square inch of your body can do to your mind. You actually start to remember what makes you tick. In a world where you are drenched with lots of self-destructive habits, it is an absolute blessing to be able to become aware of whom you really are. This practice has helped me take back the control of my own mind. I live each day now with more excitement and passion than the next. I am creating my own destiny. Officially, I did not complete all 60 classes in 60 days. I had a little bit of an injury that forced me to take a few days off. However, that is ok since I realize I was there in spirit. To anybody that has ever thought about doing it, yes, it is very hard, it is expensive, it is time consuming, and it pushes you to your limits. But, I can honestly it is the best thing that I have ever done and 100% worth it. Most importantly, to all of the teachers and staff, do not ever under-estimate for one second the impact that you are making on people's lives!! Thank you Bikram Yoga Tempe!!
Thank YOU, Josh! |
2012 Arizona Regional Yoga Asana Championship
Event Details: January 28, 2012 | 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Memorial Hall at Steele Indian School Park 300 East Indian School Road | Phoenix, Arizona 85012 Admission: $10 Website:2012 AZ Yoga Asana Championship
What is a yoga championship? "It's a beautiful celebration of the body and mind," says Rajashree Choudhury found of the nonprofit USA Yoga Federation. Courtney Mace, 2008 International Champion explained "There is always a competition, but it's not between people. It happens every time you step into the hot room, and it's a competition between the ego and the soul. And the soul always wins. It has to. So by the time you get on the stage, there is no competition anymore. There is only your soul."
Cory Tyszka representing BYT at the 2010 Arizona Yoga Asana Championships.
If you are interested in competing please let BYT know as soon as possible! We will gladly arrange coaching and support for you as you prepare. Posture of the Month Cobra Pose | Bhujangasana
Bhujanga, the Sanskrit word for 'snake', is derived from the root bhuj, which means "to bend or curve." The king cobra can glide forward while lifting the upper third of its body upright. Try to emulate this snake's powerful yet fluid motion when you practice. Imagine your legs as the snake's tail, reaching long behind you as you curve your spine to lift your chest.
Notes taken from Bikram's orange book: "As the spine is the source of energy in the human body, integrating the spine leads to a balanced, healthy and successful life. A healthy spine equals a healthy life.
This is one of the most difficult postures to learn and to understand. So we need two keys here. First, when you finish holding the arched position, don't suddenly collapse back down to the floor. Lower your head, neck and upper body slowly and smoothly, using the strength of your back and spine. We never use any abrupt diving or jerking motions; that's how you injure yourself. Controlling your movements this way also builds will power and discipline.
Second, keep your elbows close to the ribs. As you come up, try to slide them down toward the hip bones, as if you were going to touch them with the elbow points. This moves your shoulders and keeps them down, where they belong. The trapezius muscles--the sheets of muscle just under the skin of the back, between the shoulders and neck--should protrude and become more visible."
Medical Benefits for Cobra Pose:
- One of the best all around conditioners for the entire body
- Strengthens the lumbar spine, relieving pain and combating slipped or herniated discs, scoliosis and arthritis in that region
- Improved digestion
- Relief from menstrual disorders
- Improved appetite
- Raises low blood pressure
- Improves the functioning of the liver and spleen
- Strengthens the deltoids, trapezius, and triceps muscles in the upper body
