| Greetings!
The holiday season is in full swing and everyone is bustling about getting ready. Too often during this time of year we lose track of the fact that we are celebrating. Whatever your traditions, whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or the Winter Solstice, do not lose sight of the joy and meaning behind it all.
Here are a few thoughts from the teachers and staff of Bikram Yoga Tempe:
"As the year is coming to an end, the holidays offer the best time to cherish the best memories, ignore the unhappy moments and plan for the next year. Be happy. Be safe. Be with your family." - Shyam
"As you get older Christmas becomes less about presents and decorations and more about being around the people you love to be around: family, friends. Put the emphasis on the quality of time you spend with your loved ones rather than the quality of the things that you get." - Lisa
"When did the holidays become a time to survive rather than a time to enjoy? Slow down and take a breath. Take a bit of the pressure off of yourself and savor the time you spend with your loved ones." - Tricia
"No matter how big the challenge, remember that your family and friends are there for you. They are the only gift for which you need no receipt." - Reba
"The best gifts are those made with love." - Michelle
All the best to you and yours for a joyful holiday season full of love, joy and peace. |

Why We are Thankful 9 Year Anniversary Recap

On Saturday, December 3rd, we were reminded why we are so thankful. The Bikram Yoga Tempe community, each and every one of YOU, are what makes us truly blessed. So thank you for coming out and celebrating and supporting our studio. We had an amazing day talking to you and listening to your stories.

The day started out with a regular Bikram Yoga class taught by Tricia. What an amazing thing to see 95 yogis practicing side by side and sharing their energy!
At the 10 AM class, Gabi led a Demo + 1 Set class with Tricia, Katherine and Keri demonstrating the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. Students watched the first set and then joined in to fine tune their postures. Another Demo + 1 set happened at 3:30 PM with Jeremy leading the way and Audrey, Erin and Zonya demonstrating. After both of these classes we were thrilled to hear that those who attended enjoyed the in-depth look at the postures and the explanations on how to achieve form and depth.
The 1 PM and 5:30 PM classes were also special. Yogis in this class were taught round-robin style! In the 1 PM class, Reba, Jackie and Karla led the way. At 5:30 PM, Patrick, Shyam, Ron and MJ shared the podium. They each taught a portion of the class. As an extra bonus, when not teaching they were able to move around the room and give individual attention to students.
Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Bill Fechter, featured in the bottom right photo, has been a BYT member since 2002! To all of our students, old and new, you are the heart and soul of our studio!

Testimonial By Cherie Keating
I had been receiving health warnings for years: a family history of heart disease; the death of my sister at 61; a 42% fat reading during a recent check up; a sedentary, stressful job; a penchant for a lot of refined white flour foods, and the list goes on. I loved to hike but from sitting so much at work, I began to have issues with sciatic pain and the aftermath of a few mile hike would leave me out of commission for days.
A friend at work suggested I try Bikram yoga and I Googled it. Finally, I decided to take the plunge but did not want to go alone so I made a deal with my husband. If he went with me to Bikram, I would go camping with him and our son (camping? Me?). We arrived at Bikram Yoga Tempe on Father's Day and took our first class. I am not sure how we survived but I remember telling my husband, "The last time I worked this hard and sweat this much, they sent us home with a baby!" Patrick promised us we would feel better if we came back the very next day, and wanting to get the most of our two-week pass, we went back every day. Immediately we noticed that we slept better, felt better, and looked better. People began telling me my skin looked great and asked what I was doing (I am 54, no one has commented on my skin in 20 years!). That was it, we were hooked! Since Father's Day, my sciatica is gone, my stress is under control, I have lost 10 pounds, a dress size, and my clothes fit better. My husband's blood pressure is in check and we have something fun to share (hopefully he has forgotten the part about camping!). My husband tries to meet me every other day for the 4:30 Bikram class and it is like we have a "date."
I tell everyone who will listen about my Bikram journey: how my body has changed, how the instructor's have gotten me to think differently about my courage and commitment and, most importantly of all, the health benefits my husband and I have experienced.
The instructors at Bikram Yoga Tempe have been amazing! From Tricia I have learned what stillness in a posture is. From Reba I have learned how to find humor in every pose. Jeremy and Audrey are poetry in motion. From Patrick, well, let's just say we love his class. You never know what to expect. Charles and the gang make sure they let us know we are valued as friends and not just customers.
I have belonged to expensive gyms over the years, taken quite a few yoga classes and have even had personal trainers. Nothing has done for me what Bikram Yoga has done! Don't be afraid of the heat, it is your friend, I promise! Lock your knee, lock your knee, lock your knee! |

Posture of the Month Awkward Pose | Utkatasana
Awkward Pose is, well, awkward. All three parts warm up the muscles and joints in your legs for class as well as build strength and focus.
Why? The Benefits: Tones and shape the legs (And quickly!) Tones the arms (triceps TIGHT!) Strengthens the ankles and feet Strengthens the abdominal muscles (suck it in, tighten up, HOLD it in!) Stimulates circulation to lower extremities Relieves rheumatism and arthritis in legs and feet Helps cure slipped discs and lower spine maladies Increases concentration Builds discipline and self control
How? Posture Tips:
1st Part Keep your HEELS behind your TOES. You should not see them in the mirror Keep your knees 6 inches apart - they may want to come in closer or separate. Don't let them! Put more weight in your heels
2nd Part SIT DOWN - if you never sit in the chair you will always be stuck in the bar stool Keep your heels behind your toes here too. This will strengthen your feet and ankles Keep your upper body back - start to finish imagine you are being pulled up by the hair toward the ceiling 3rd Part Squeeze your knees together Sit down SLOWLY to build strength Keep your knees together and point them forward and down a little so that you can see your hips just above your knees in the mirror As you come up, keep your fingers right in line with your shoulders in the mirror. Focusing their will help keep your spine straight.
All 3 Parts Keep your arms engaged Suck your stomach in! |
