30 Day Challenge? Yeah, I did that! (And more...) | |
There's nothing easy about the 30 or 60 Day Challenge. 30 hot and sweaty 90 minute classes in 30 days is tough (we don't call it a challenge for nothing)! At the end of it though, you have to admit it; it is worth it. Just ask any of these yogis who recently finished their challenges!

Trick or Treat!
Newsletter | October 2011 |
Greetings! Motivating yourself to go to yoga can be much like going out Trick-or-Treating. You arrive in your costume and take your chances. Trick or treat? You never quite know what you are going to get. You may come willingly, excited to sweat, and lo and behold you are humbled by the experience. On the other hand--and more commonly--you may arrive tired and sore, only to discover reserves of energy, strength, and flexibility that allow you to go further than you knew you could. The experience becomes transcendent.
Here is the wonderful thing: whatever the case may be, whether you do 1 posture or all 26, you get the benefits of that yoga class. In the end, each and every final Savasana is a treat. There are no tricks, only the breakdown of your expectations and limitations as you forge the connection between mind, body and spirit.

Postures of the Month Backbend and Padahastasana
This month you get, not one, but two postures to consider. Perhaps it seems like a trick now, but really, fine tuning these two back to back poses is a real treat. The backbend is actually the third part of Half Moon Pose and together with Padahastasana, these poses are intended as a warm-up for the spine. That means the harder you work, the more prepared your spine will be for the rest of class.
Why? The Benefits... Back-bending... Stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and prepare the body for action. Helps counteract the damage caused by bad posture Relieves back pain, bronchial distress, scoliotic deformities, frozen shoulder Realigns the spine Promotes proper kidney function Helps with digestion and elimination Breaks through insecurity and fear; opens the heart chakra Relieves stress and builds confidence Padahastasana | Hands to Feet Pose.... Stretches the spine, increasing flexibility Firms and trims the lower body Strengthens the legs, glutes, obliques, deltoids and trapezius muscles Increases the flexibility in the legs and sciatic nerves Improves circulation Clearly the benefits are worth it, but let's be honest, sometimes it is a bit difficult to listen carefully when your back sure enough "hurts like Hell" or you are learning to sympathize with a Japanese ham sandwich. So the next question is... How? Posture Tips... Backbend: Relax! The more you relax, the easier and less painful the backbend will be. When you drop your head back, drop it all the way back, letting go at the base of your neck. When you feel stuck, focus your attention on you lower back and let go of that tension. Don't be scared. You are not about to break yourself; pain often means you are doing something right. Use the Breath. INHALE before you drop your head back to lift your chest up. Use 80-20 breathing while in the posture. On the exhales find your depth and relaxation. Padahastasana: Bend your knees if you need to (and most people do!). As you bend forward, bend your knees to protect the spine. While in the posture, it is much more important to have your stomach on your thighs, chest on your knees and face on your legs below the knees than to have your knees straight. So BEND your knees as much as you need to. Then try to push them back and lock them but don't lose the body to leg connection. If you physically cannot touch your face, then just try your hardest to get there and little by little, you will. Elbows behind your legs on your calf muscles. Or as close to that as you can get. This will help you keep the body on the legs and will also help you pull. Pull your heels, roll forward, push your knees back. Those three actions will align your body and create the stretch in your spine and the backs of your legs. Suck your stomach in! Maybe this should have been the first tip. This is a forward bend and so you must be very careful to protect the spine. Start to finish, suck your stomach in! This will help you get the best stretch in your spine, protect your back and also work on your abdominal strength. |

Halloween Fun
Sure, this year Halloween falls on a Monday, but that doesn't mean it has to be all business. Celebrate Halloween this year by dressing up for class! Bring a little bit of fun into your practice with a pair of devil horns or cat ears or maybe a pair of goofy glasses or butterfly wings. Or bring a whole lot of fun by going all out; some of the memorable costumes of the past? Michael Phelps, Lady Gaga, Roller girl, GI Jane, Wonder Woman, Disco Girl and so many more! Let your imagination and creativity go wild, but remember that you are still going to sweat!
Prizes will be given out throughout the day for costumed yogis and those voted best dressed! Check out these pictures from Halloweens past for some inspiration!
