30 Day Challenge? Yeah, I did that! (And more...)
There's nothing easy about the 30 or 60 Day Challenge. 30 hot and sweaty 90 minute classes in 30 days is tough (we don't call it a challenge for nothing)! At the end of it though, you have to admit it; it is worth it.
Just ask any of these yogis who recently finished their challenges!
30 Day Teagan Wall Jackie Lamaire Hart Larew Sara Distefano Mary Millard Crista Lucio Birgit Zimmerman Melisse Hart Jessica Vargas Michelle Bartley
60 Day Idaliza Sosa Norman Veierstahler Margarita Soloria Carolyn Ziara

Fantastic effort yogis!
If you are interested in a Challenge, just see the front desk for details!

New Student Parking
| | |
You have all seen the signs, "Reserved for New Students." We do our best to set these up before each class; sometimes we get busy and forget. Either way, the first three to four spots just to the right of the door are reserved for new students. If it is not your first or second class, please do not take one of these spots. Leave them for new students, who need to have examples in front of them and be within easy sight of the teacher.

Lost and Found
| Blame it on the yoga brain! We have an assortment of mats, clothing, bottles and jewelry that have been left here at BYT.
If you think you may have lost something at the studio, please check with us at the front desk. At the end of each month all unclaimed items will be donated.
| |
Just a heads up: we reserve the right to dispose of sweaty towels and undergarments for reasons of sanitation. Please take caution not to leave them behind.
|
First Fridays
On the first Friday of each month, firefighters, police, and paramedics are welcome to join us at BYT for free!

Freedom!
Newsletter | July 2011 |
Greetings! We hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! Over 20 countries celebrate their independence during July, so naturally freedom has been on my mind this month. Yoga helps us acheive freedom: freedom from pain, freedom from stress, freedom from attachment, freedom from limitation. Each day we practice this yoga, we choose to struggle, breathe, relax, push, pull, compress and stretch our way through physical and mental weakness and inflexibility. In doing so we earn the freedom from pain and hence the freedom to live the life we love.
As you find yourself day after day in that hot room, sweat dripping into your eyes and up your nose, body painfully lifting, tucking, pulling, kicking and stretching, just remember you are fighting for freedom. The freedom from pain is the freedom to play. The freedom from stress is the freedom to laugh. The freedom from limitation is the freedom to go beyond your own expectations and to truly live.

More On Hydration!
There is a good chance we will be discussing this topic until the temperatures once again drop below 100 degrees. Until then, I hope you are listening and getting plenty of water. Over the last two weeks, as the thermometer has registered over 115 degrees in the middle of the day, I have found it increasing difficult to take my own advice. Water is filling and, well, boring sometimes. So here are a few tips to get those few extra ounces you may still yet be missing.
1. Drinking multiple liters of water a day can be boring, especially for those who avoid juices and other flavored beverages. If this sounds like you, try giving your water a little fruit spritz. Squeeze a bit of lemon, orange or lime in there with a pinch of sea salt. Or try a few cubes of watermelon or honeydew (frozen or fresh).
2. Eat your fluids. What? Yes, food has water in it. Of course, we knew that, but choosing foods with high water content can make a big difference in your hydration. The obvious contenders are fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked or raw. But rice, pasta, dairy and meats also provide your body with water. Take moisture content of food into consideration when planning meals.
3. Chugging water can make your stomach ache. Be kind to your tummy and drink water in small amounts throughout the day. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go and see if you can drink a mouthful of water every 10 to 15 minutes. You should not try to drink your required ounces all at once (especially not a half hour before yoga).
And as always remember that caffeinated and alcoholic beverages will dehydrate you, so be sure you have a big glass of water along with your morning coffee!
Yogis are not the only ones you have to worry about staying hydrated in the summer! While reading about hydration, I stumbled across this article about the hydration stations in the Phoenix area. Take a look and maybe even join the outreach efforts to keep everyone in the valley safe! |

Just for Fun...
More pictures of hiking and yoga! I am rather partial to photos of Bikram yogis enjoying the great outdoors! Loving the life we live :)
Recent 60 Day Challenger, Idaliza Sosa, performs a beautiful Standing Bow Pulling Pose while enjoying a hike through Fay Canyon in Sedona.

Recent graduate of the Spring 2011 Bikram Yoga Teacher Training and Bikram Yoga Tempe teacher, Leslie Purucker, charges forward on Camelback. The harder you kick, you balance forever!
Anne Purucker demonstrates her unbreakable concentration in Awkward Pose on Camelback mountain. These sisters are unstoppable!
