| A BIG "Thank you!" to the Bikram Yoga Studios of the Valley | | Our temporary closure sent many yogi-hungry practitioners out into the world to seek a temporary home. The entire BYT staff and community wants to extend a HUGE "Thank you" to the Bikram Yoga Institute, Bikram Yoga North Scottsdale, Bikram Yoga Phoenix, Bikram Yoga Paradise Valley and Bikram Yoga Avondale for welcoming us into your home! We are so grateful.

| New Evening Class Times | In order to improve your experience during the evening classes, we have increased the interval between our two busiest times.
The 6:15 PM class now starts at 6:30 PM and the 8:00 PM class now starts at 8:15 PM.
So far having a full half hour between the 4:30 and the 6:30 has helped tremendously!
So far, these are the only changes to the schedule.

30 Day Challenge? Yeah, I did that! | |
There's nothing easy about the 30 or 60 Day Challenge. 30 hot and sweaty 90 minute classes in 30 days is tough (we don't call it a challenge for nothing!) At the end of it, though, you have to admit it; it is worth it.
Just ask any of these yogis who finished their 30 Day Challenges in the first weeks of 2011!
Diane Nunez Dottie Durrschmidt Erica Fransen Morgan Davis Nikki Dolce Lauri Brouwer Gary Ahmann Michael Matos Justine Farenga Madeleine Kraman Yeseul Jeong Richard Cotugno
Fantastic effort yogis!
Now is the perfect time to start your 30 or 60 Day Challenge! The studio is back up and running and this is a great way to get your practice back on track! Plus, there is no better way to spend the 60 days leading up to swimsuit season!

| Kind Words from Warm Hearts | |
Going 30 day without yoga was tough, and yet we received so many kind words. Your expression of concern for the teachers and staff of BYT, your appreciation of our studio, your continued encouragement and your smiling happy faces on the day we reopened truly made an impression on us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Here are just a few of the kind words we received:
A quote of yoga and home, from Julie C. "At a time when we could not feel further from our home, Yoga reminds us that we are already there." -Rolf Gates
And Julie stated " I'm ready now! How did I ever take you all for granted! I had no idea what "state of the art" heating, humidification, ventilation, and air purification really meant....Now I do!"
Simply put, by Linda T. "I love BYT!"
A note from lovely Ruth Kruger, 75 years old:
"During the month you were closed, I noticed I really, really need Bikram Yoga and how much it helps me!"
We miss you too! By Mandy Manus "I can't wait to see, teach, hug and practice with my Tempe yogis. I've missed you all so much!!"
One of a kind, by Nancy W: "There's no other Studio to compare with how lovely the ambiance is, how top-notch the facilities and teachers are, and how welcoming you and all the staff are. You rock!"
Thank you for your kind words from warm hearts. We are blessed.

Welcome Home!
Newsletter | March 2011
|
Greetings! Whenever someone hands me quarters and dimes to pay for water, the exchange is invariably accompanied by an apology. "Everyone loves change," I smile. As far as quarters go, this is absolutely true since I often buy them from the cash box to do my laundry (and as a yoga teacher I do a lot of laundry). Philosophically though, change is fraught with apprehension that comes from letting go and facing the unknown. So often anxiety and stubbornness combine to keep our sights clouded from the positive aspects of change. Possibility, opportunity, novel experience, growth and appreciation: all of these things accompany change.
When we temporarily closed our doors in February, CHANGE was unavoidable. Some of us took the month off while others of us made the trek to other yoga studios, transplanting our practices. Either way, we all welcomed something new into our lives. Maybe you spent more time at the gym, or more time baking cookies with the kids or walking outside in the neighborhood park. Or perhaps you went to a different studio and took class from new teachers surrounded by a few new faces. Thankfully, our time in the yoga room, the patience and acceptance that we cannot help but embrace in those sweaty 90 minutes, helped us through.
However you spent the last 4 weeks, we are so grateful to welcome you back to Bikram Yoga Tempe.
You might notice a few changes around the studio from an extra shower in the ladies room to a slight change in our schedule to a lighter, brighter ceiling. But one thing will never change and that is the gratitude and joy we feel for having you as part of our community. You are truly like family to us and it warms our hearts to welcome you home!
Here is to Om Sweet Om!
With love and gratitude,
Tricia & the Teachers and Staff of Bikram Yoga Tempe

Tuladandasana: Balancing Stick Pose Featured Posture | Tips and Benefits
Balancing Stick Pose, Tuladandasana, is one of the best answers to the myth that you don't get your cardio in yoga class. This ten second posture will get your heart rate up in no time. There are so many tremendous benefits, be sure you are getting the most out of your efforts!
To start, here is why you should put your 100% effort into those 10 seconds:
Your heart will thank you! The forward tilt of you upper body sends high-speed blood into your heart, cleaning out the veins and arteries and strengthening the heart muscle.
Strength from fingertips to toes. Every muscle in your whole body should be contracted during Balancing Stick and so you are building tremendous strength in your legs, hips, back and arms.
Yes, Flexibility Too. Your shoulders should be on fire because you are STRETCHING your fingers forward while at the same time stretching your toes back. The result is that your whole body from your fingers into your shoulders, back (both the spine and the muscles associated with it), hips and legs stretches, creating length and flexibility.
Concentrate. Focus. To do this posture you must 'make you your mind' and use your determination and focus from start to finish. If you lose your focus, you fall over or wilt and so by doing this posture you build concentration and discipline as well as strength and flexibility.
Now that you know they WHY, here is the HOW:
Start at the back of your mat with toes and heels together so that you can take a big step forward. Pay attention to the setup: arms up over your head so that your arms are with your ears, grip interlaced with only the index fingers released. Squeeze your palms together. Lock your elbows and lean your upper body back to get your spine straight. Stretch UP. Step forward and immediately lock your knees. KEEP THEM LOCKED throughout the posture. If you are stepping forward with your right leg then point your left toes. At this point your body is one straight line from finger tips to toes. Keep this alignment. Bring your body down and your leg up at the same time. Keep your arms with your ears and your chin away from your chest.
The ideal form is your whole body parallel to the floor from your fingers to your toes, stretching in opposite directions. Sometimes, this is not the reality. Go as far as you can while keeping the good form; that means keep your body locked in one straight line and come down only as far as you can without collapsing.
Bikram's Key:
"This posture is all about locking the body into one solid line. To do that, imagine a tug of war: Someone is pulling your back foot toward the wall with all his might and someone else is pulling your outstretched hands as hard as she can in the opposite direction, toward the mirror in front of you."
