A fight by any other name is still a fight.
Fort Carson officials confirmed Tuesday they are discussing changing the name of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site northeast of Trinidad to "Fort Carson South" - a relabeling that was certain to put foes of the Army's past efforts to expand Pinon Canyon on full alert. READ MORE HERE

Name game sets off new Piņon Canyon furor September 21, 2011 5:10 PM THE GAZETTE
Fort Carson officials thought renaming the Piņon Canyon Maneuver Site would help bury the hatchet with southern Colorado ranchers who opposed the post's now-shelved expansion plans for the training area.
Instead, the public relations move went horribly wrong this month when ranchers learned of it and decided it was part of an ongoing conspiracy to separate them from their beloved rangeland.

Pertinent Comment: I can see why the Army would like to get rid of the negative PR image associated with "Pinon Canyon." I'll bet the nuclear industry would have like to rename Three-mile Island too. "Pinon Canyon" stands for waste, abuse, mismanagement and worse. The Army has thumbed its nose at the property rights of citizens, demonstrated contempt toward congressional mandates, and flat out ignored federal court orders. We pay attention when we see the words, "Pinon Canyon." The Army is hoping that we'll pay less attention when we see mention of expansion at "Fort Caron South." Army Secretary John McHugh promised not to expand "Pinon Canyon" for the next five years, but said nothing about "Fort Carson South." The Army needs to do more than change the name if they want to change attitudes. They need to ask the DoD to cancel the waiver which authorizes expansion and work with our Colorado delegation to enact a permanent ban on expansion.
