Q: Will the FCC accept and grant a waiver permitting the continued operation of 25 kHz wideband systems after January 1, 2013? A: Maybe. They will certainly accept waiver requests, and in a Public Notice released in July 2011, provided specific guidance on suggested content and filing procedures. For example, if a licensee were migrating to an alternate band that was not subject to the narrowbanding mandate, such a waiver might be favorably reviewed. In all cases, however, significant documentation illustrating efforts towards narrowbanding must be provided. If insufficient efforts have been made, it is unlikely the FCC will act favorably. Further, the FCC suggested that all narrowbanding waivers should be submitted no later than the end of this year to provide ample time for review and consideration. Visit EWA's Narrowbanding FAQs for more answers to often raised narrowbanding questions. If you don't see your specific question, click on the "Send Us Your Narrowband Questions" link. |
