Director Notes

Can you believe Summer is over? Of course
that means that the cold and flu season is upon us. Boulder County Public
Health reports that H1N1(A) influenza continues to be active in the Boulder County community.
National and international data
indicates that, compared to the seasonal flu, 2009 H1N1 virus appears to be
affecting the younger age group, but it causes no more severe illness than
seasonal flu. For the 2009-2010 influenza season, which began August 30th,
there have been 4 hospitalized cases of influenza type A in Boulder County thus
far; 1 has been confirmed to be 2009 H1N1 (A). It is important to note, though,
that no other type of influenza appears to be circulating at this point,
indicating that these cases are most likely all H1N1.
The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine has
been tested in clinical trials and was approved for use by the Federal Drug
Administration (FDA). It is currently in production and will likely be ready for
the public in mid-October. The vaccine will be available at most health care
provider offices, community health clinics, and at Boulder County Public Health
immunization clinics for children under age 18. At this point, no special
community clinics are scheduled; however, they will be made available should the
need arise.
Get
information about the flu season from Boulder county Public Health at http://www.bouldercounty.org/health/.
Have a safe and fun Halloween.

Low Cost Health Insurance Program for
Children and Pregnant Women
Many
children (age 18 and younger) in working and middle-class families qualify
for this low-cost health insurance program, which is also available for
pregnant women. If a family qualifies, the most they would pay is a $25 premium
per year for one child ($35 per year for more than one) and a co-pay of $0 to
$5 per doctor visit.
Eligibility is determined after child care and elder care costs, medical
and dental expenses, child support, alimony, and health insurance premiums are
deducted from the families' monthly income. Once enrolled, the insurance
is valid for an entire year--even if the family's income increases.
If you know a child or pregnant woman who does not have health insurance
please call Karen Niebrugge at 303.449.0177 x.8.
