Low Cost Health Insurance Program for Children and Pregnant Women

Many children (age 18 and younger) in working and middle-class families qualify for this low-cost health insurance program, which is also available for pregnant women. If a family qualifies, the most they would pay is a $25 premium per year for one child ($35 per year for more than one) and a co-pay of $0 to $5 per doctor visit.

Eligibility is determined after child care and elder care costs, medical and dental expenses, child support, alimony, and health insurance premiums are deducted from the families' monthly income.  Once enrolled, the insurance is valid for an entire year--even if the family's income increases.

If you know a child or pregnant woman who does not have health insurance please call Karen Niebrugge at 303.449.0177 x.8.

Director Notes

September is here. Days are shorter, nights are cooler and children are heading back to school. If you are a parent of a toddler, you may be sending your child to preschool for the first time. It is a rite of passage for the entire family and you may feel excited as well as anxious, asking yourself...' is he/she ready for such a big step out into the world?'

It is natural to feel some trepidation about this new adventure.  Remember that your child takes his cues from you, and the more calm and reassuring you can be, the more confident your child will be that he can handle the challenges ahead. Statements like "I can't believe my baby is starting  preschool " or "if you don't like it, you can come home early" are not as confidence-building as "I wonder what you are going to build with all the blocks that we saw?"

The following are suggestions around how to help make your child's transition a positive and successful one:

 1) Help your child to be well rested when school begins. Sleep adjustments are not easy, so allowing a few weeks to transition towards an earlier bed time ritual will help him to be at his best for the first day of school.

2) Visit the school with your child before the first day. The more familiar a child is with the new environment, the easier the transition will be. Point out one exciting activity that he will enjoy i.e. a swing set, and remind him that when school starts he will be swinging on the swings. It will be helpful for your child to meet his teacher and for him to see the two of you interacting. If you show your child that his teacher is someone that you like and trust, he will have an easier time forming an attachment to her.

3) When school begins, preschoolers will want you to walk with them into school, but try not to linger too long. When it is time for parents to go, take the cue. Initiate saying goodbye. Give hugs and words of support, (plan a goodbye ritual ahead of time with  an agreed upon number of hugs, etc ),  let him know when you will be back...then leave. Your job is done; let the teacher begin hers.

If your child cries as many will, remember that most children quickly acclimate and become engaged in activities soon after their parents leave. It is normal for a child to experience some degree of separation anxiety and shyness initially, and most teachers have experience helping children through these first tender goodbyes. Though you may find yourself wanting to hover, remember that it is helpful to send the message that you believe that he can do it on his own.

4) Your child will be experiencing a vast number of changes with the start of school, i.e.  a new teacher (s), new rules / expectations, new toys, new playmates, a new potty, and possibly new foods. Thus, he will likely be more tired and sensitive, and it will help to keep family life quiet, simple and if possible plan extra one-on-one time.

5) If after several weeks of school, your child gets upset and expresses that he does not want to go to school, schedule time to meet with his teacher. Teachers can be great resources with ideas about how to provide your child with the extra support that he needs in order to turn his experience around and help him to begin to enjoy all the opportunities that the school has to offer.
