LOW-COST,  NO-COST MARKETING TIPS:

CROSS-MARKET  YOUR BUSINESS

Today's tip? Cross-market your business with other companies, so that you can promote each other. For example,  I recently masterminded a cross-marketing program for one of my clients, a dentist. He specializes in offering a new type of teeth-whitening. But he was missing out on marketing his dental practice to brides. I told him that a teeth whitening procedure is something that all brides want to know about -- So, to market this dentist to bridal patients, I contacted all the hotels nearby that host weddings and offer wedding packages.  Voila!  Faster than you can say "Crest Whitestrip," these hotels all agreed to include information about this dentist, in their hotel marketing materials and in their wedding packages.  It was a win-win for everyone.  Cross-marketing two businesses is a low-cost marketing strategy that goes together like peanut butter and jelly.

GET YOUR PRODUCT FEATURED IN A PRODUCTION

If you saw the humorous documentary Supersize Me, about McDonald's, you saw a great movie.  Well, that producer, Morgan Spurlock, is at it again, with a new movie about product placements in films called The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.  And that's what this marketing tip is all about - which is: get your product featured in a production  Sure, it costs thousands of dollars in Hollywood, but that doesn't mean that you can't promote your company's products at the local high school or community college or university.  If your company makes fantastic chocolate-chip cookies, or the world's best widgets, donate them to Emerson College or Boston University, where students are always creating video productions and might just want to incorporate your product into their feature. When you think outside the box, you can wind up with scores of new customers that you hadn't before considered.

 MARKETING TIP OF THE MONTH:

Dare to be different and unconventional in your business. For example, the latest marketing trend in air travel is attention-grabbing in-flight safety announcements. And the jokesters at Air New Zealand are at it again.

Air New Zealand is getting passengers' attention with a humorous safety video, featuring fitness guru Richard Simmons. Believe it or not, this safety video has even become one of the most-watched films on YouTube.

The video shows Simmons and Air New Zealand staff, including its CEO, in pink shorts and a purple headband, demonstrating proper safety procedures.

At a time when most airlines seem cookie-cutter, Air New Zealand is successfully using humor and wacky marketing, which I call "Meshuganah Marketing" to set itself apart...and so can you.
