The mission of the Greater Akron Chamber is to drive economic development and prosperity for the people of the Greater Akron Region.

Region's Leaders Prepare for Milwaukee Visit

This fall, a delegation of 25-50 members from the Greater Akron Chamber, Akron Tomorrow and the University Park Alliance will travel to Milwaukee for Akron's first InterCity Leadership Visit. The initiative is aimed at understanding successful models of community development for cities facing issues comparable to those of the Akron region.

The InterCity Leadership Program has two purposes:

  1. To gain ideas, programs and community tools that can be adapted for Greater Akron.
  2. To build relationships among delegate members that will result in improved team efforts, networking and mentoring for the individuals and our region.

The format of the InterCity Leadership is important. This is not a static exchanging of notes. Our delegate team will experience and explore Milwaukee's success stories at the locations where activities are taking place. By immersing participants in the city, the Chamber's planning committee hopes to garner a well-rounded perspective of the city.

Milwaukee was chosen because it has faced several of the challenges that the Chamber has identified as crucial to the ongoing economic and community success of Akron. These criteria include producing, retaining and attracting talent; cluster development; urban planning; and other initiatives such as the improvement of resources for health-, creative- and entrepreneurial-related jobs and issues.

The Milwaukee InterCity Leadership visit will take place September 18-20.

Spotlight: Excellence in Business Award Recipients

Each year, the Greater Akron Chamber recognizes several small businesses at the Small Business Council Awards Luncheon. Below is a preview of the 2011 Excellence in Business recipients.

Lexicomp in Hudson is a provider of drug information and clinical content for the healthcare industry. The company started in 1978.

Since 1983, Spectrum Surgical Instruments in Stow has been providing surgical instruments, surgical instrument repair services and instrument processing accessories to the hospital, surgery center and veterinary markets.

Words of Wisdom: Recap of Unplugged with the Mayor

Mayor Plusquellic had a candid discussion on May 10th with 70 young professionals--the biggest turnout yet for the YPN Quarterly Speaker Series--about the state of the city and how to become more engaged in the community. The conversation included a dialogue on factors that make young professionals want to live, work and raise their families in the region.

The YPN's Community Engagement Crew is working on an event series that is designed to introduce and educate YPs on the issues important to our community, public policy and the political leaders of Akron-as well as what they stand for.

Targeting Talent: Program Aims to Bring in the Best

For years the message has been clear: regions that recruit and retain excellent young professionals give themselves the best opportunities for long-term growth and economic prosperity. But as simple as the answer is, the method for attracting these individuals can be quite challenging.

To help HR professionals and those responsible for organizational recruitment, the Marketing the Region Crew is holding its Cool School program, designed solely at educating participants on what young professionals seek in an organization and community. Cool School covers generational differences, regional statistics, YP communication tips and the importance of arts, culture and geography.

The inaugural Cool School will take place on Thursday, June 30 at the Downtown Akron library. For more information or to register for this half-day program, go online or contact Angela Presutti.

Great Excuses to Network

Greater Akron Chamber events are all about making connections in the community, and while you're at it, you may as well enjoy yourself. Here are some of the upcoming Chamber opportunities that encourage the best of both worlds.

Golf Classic: The 31st Membership Golf Classic will take place Monday, July 11th at Prestwick Country Club. The outing is complete with lunch, dinner, beverages, prize holes and awards! Register yourself or your foursome by July 1st at (330) 237-1214 or online.

China trip

Cultural Immersion Trips:
Over 600 people have traveled with the Chamber to China since 2009. Your chance to experience this majestic country comes this October, when we visit ancient and modern sites and immerse the group in Chinese culture for nine days, starting on the 12th.

Travel plans are also set for the French Riviera, September 14-21, 2011; tropical Costa Rica, January 28 - February 5, 2012; and Athens and the Greek Islands, March 22-31, 2012. To register for any of these trips, e-mail or call Tony Rinella at (330) 237-1250, attend an informational meeting on Monday June 13, at 5:00 at the Downtown Akron library or learn more on our website.
