Most people move away from the place they were born and return from time to time to visit. Some people move to another part of the world. There are things you may miss from your hometown and can be homesick for familiar things and food and people that brought you comfort in days gone by.
Another kind of homesickness can be present in you and you may not even be aware of it.
Do you ever experience homesickness or sadness to return to somewhere you do not consciously remember? Is there ever a restless feeling that you want to return home, but not to any place you have consciously been?
This can be a spiritual homesickness to return to God - or return home to heaven. The Course in Miracles affirms that we unconsciously dwell in separateness from God and as we spiritually awaken we search for ways to get closer to heaven again.
I regularly have bouts of homesickness and longing, and I thought it was for the US -
as I have been away from my home country., living in Europe for over 20 years. I realize, however, that I am not always longing for my hometown, but for my heavenly hometown -
Where God abides and I long to be.
(I do, however, miss New England Clam Chowder and Dairy Queen!)
If this feeling comes upon you, what can you do? Do not despair. You can recognize it now for what it is - homesickness for your return to heaven. Realize that while God is in Heaven and everywhere - He also resides within you. His comfort and words of wisdom are there whenever you need them.
How do you reach God within? There are many ways to listen to God: meditation, mindfully walking in nature, doing good works to help others, reading inspirational books, listening to Christian music.
You are still here for a reason to accomplish things in your life and to be of service to others. Listen to the messages God is wanting to send you to help you cope with everyday life.
So if you feel a longing in yourself and you can't quite figure out what you are lonesome for, it might be that your soul is remembering, for just a moment, your other home - where God waits with open arms for you - when it is your time to return home...
But in the meantime, appreciate every moment you have been given to make a difference for:
Everyday above ground is a good day!
Namaste!
