Director's Corner

This summer, I had the privilege of working with two incredible interns: Liz Jackson and Luke Wilkerson. They brought great energy and enthusiasm as we worked hard together on helping build community at the Center. I wish that all of you had the opportunity to get to know them as I did this summer. Some of you did. For those of you who didn't, here's Liz Jackson's perspective of what she experienced this summer at the Center.

 See you at the Center!

Anthony

Center Director

"Countless changes" has been more than just a tagline this summer; it has been a reality for the Center.  Change is happening around us: we are saying goodbye to long-time staff members, summer is winding down, kids are going back to school and fall routines are setting in.

Yet as we experience all this external change, we shouldn't forget another important part of change: the change that happens inside.  As I reflect on my summer at the Center, I was affected and changed in many ways.

Through all the ways I've learned and grown this summer, one common theme runs through it all: people.  Whether it's been chatting with a member at the Bistro, joking around with my coworkers, or sweating through noontime basketball, the community at the Center has changed me.

I've realized that as we strive to improve ourselves and grow, we can't do it without others around us.  That's why I love the Center.  The Center provides a welcoming, accepting community.  It's hard to leave this place unchanged.

So I just want to say thank you to every single person at the Center.  When I go back to Kansas, I won't forget the joy of splashing children in the pool, the inviting smiles of front desk staff, the wisdom of exercising seniors, and the endless energy of the fitness instructors.

This place has shown me what true community looks like.

As you spend time at the Center, enjoy the vigorous classes, the free coffee, and the crowded hot tub.  But beyond that, take advantage of the people here.  You won't leave the same.

Sincerely,

Liz Jackson

Center Summer Intern

KYLE RAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Many of you know Kyle Ray.  He is a former tennis coach and fitness director at PCC.  For the last 6 years he has been working through sports to reach disenfranchised youth of the Cape Town area in South Africa.  In October he is going to be running a tennis camp for disadvantaged kids to be introduced to the game.  I asked him what the tennis community here at PCC could do to show him our support. His response was immediate, "tennis balls".  Tennis balls are outrageously expensive and he said if we could come up with $150 he could purchase enough balls to run his camps.  Let's do it.  Email me if you would like to participate and I will give you the details and the non-profit info to work with.

Thanks,

Coach Sid

SUMMER WRAP-UP

We had one of our best summers yet here at PCC.  Our junior tennis camp was filled with returning players and new players!  Kids were begging their parents to let them come back as many weeks as possible.  Our coaches did a wonderful job keeping it fun and getting all the kids excited about tennis.

PE

Most people get upset when summer comes to an end, but the PE program doesn't! The end of summer means that the elementary school year is almost here. The PE team spent their August getting ready for their biggest school year yet. This fall the PE teams' 17 coaches will be setting foot on 7 different school campuses in the Redwood City School district. The team will be teaching team sports to over sixty 3rd-5th grade classrooms.  One of the things we are most excited about this year is our outstanding coaches. Our team is made up of young adults who are passionate about fitness, children, and the local community.

What we are excited about:

Relationships

  • Build deeper relationships with teachers we've been serving for the past two year.
  • Love our students as they move on from grade to grade.
  • Schools valuing our program as an important part of their schools' curriculum.

Community

  • Reach out and partner to different groups in the community and the world.
  • Work with other community groups to better benefit our schools.
  • Use team sports to build community in each classroom.

 The Team

  • Watch our team grow as they affected by our students
  • To have hearts for the community strengthened
  • To reach new heights and find out what they are really capable of.
