Director's Corner

Summer has hit the Center. The activities and number of people have risen along with the temperature.

Our tennis camp, swim school, and swim team are in full swing. Our fitness classes, Masters, and tennis teams continue on their busy schedules. We are completing our final improvements: tennis platform, sandbox, landscaping, painting projects, and gym upgrades. And the Bistro is open!

First of all, I want to thank you for your patience and cooperation as we prepared and launched our summer activities.

Secondly, I ask that you partner with me in strengthening the Center's sense of community especially this summer.

At the Center, we believe that communities are built one relationship at a time. Whether you are new to the Center or have been part of the Center for years, you can help make the Center a better community.

And all you need is less than 10 minutes.

In less than 10 minutes, you can warmly welcome someone. In less than 10 minutes, you can find out someone's name and what first brought them to the Center. In less than 10 minutes, you can find out at least three interesting facts about a person that will help you remember their name.

You can try it this weekend at the We Are PCCBlock Party on July 3rd.  The PCC Center, Church, School Age Child Care and Preschool communities will all come together for a BBQ, Battle of the Bands, patriotic musicsing-along, carnival games and bounce houses.  And remember, the BlockParty is all free.

Whether it's at the Block Party, in the weight room, in a fitness class, in the pool, in the lobby or in one of the Center camps, I'm confident that you'll have plenty of opportunities to build community this summer.

Try it. It won't take much and in the process, you'll be helping make the Center a better community. Thanks for your partnership.

See you at the Center!

Fitness Success Stories

We have a very robust fitness class offering as well as four outstanding personal trainers here at PCC. The instructors and trainers work very hard to help you, the member, reach and exceed your fitness goals. Below you will find two success stories in the members' own words. One member used our personal trainer, and another member  who attended many of our classes.  We hope you'll find these encouraging on your journey to better health.

Hitting Goals with Monique

Monique Story is a great personal trainer. She is dedicated to her profession and committed to helping you achieve your goals. The first thing she asked me is "what do you want to achieve". Based on my goals and deadline for achieving them she created a routine for me. Every couple of weeks she would add more and more and the combination was working.

She stressed the importance of four main things and how they complement each other: the cardiovascular workout, the core workout, the weights workout and stretching. Within the 4 weeks I noticed results and she made it a point to congratulate me on my achievement. She also stressed the importance of diet, how that complements the exercise program and gave me information on how to eat healthier.

What I really like about Monique is the way she encourages you to not give up, to keep focused on your goals when you think you can't do one more exercise and gives you that high five when you have completed that day's program. If you want results I highly recommend you train with Monique Story.

Shedding Pounds with Dawn and others

In January 2011 I joined the PCC, unfit and overweight, with the usual New Year's intention of changing things.

I started in Dawns "Group Power" class on a cold and wet January morning at 5.50 am. Despite the early hour, I was hooked.

The following week I also attended the "Body Blast and Pilates" classes, and after a few weeks of exercise and of watching what I ate, I started to notice a real improvement in my level of fitness and a noticeable weight loss. This helped motivate me even more.

A large part of my success is due to the PCC instructors (especially Dawn) and the other class members who fall out of bed with me on those cold mornings. And the ability to drop off my boys whilst I work out has been very useful.

I now find myself 18 lbs lighter and much more energized. I even feel better able to run after my two young boys!

Thank you to the PCC community!

USTA END OF THE SEASON PARTY

Congratulations to all of our Captains, Co-Captains, and team members on a great season:  Brian McRae (4.5), Brett Ayoob (4.0), Don Rust & Perry Thorndyke (3.5), Missy Rhen & Terri Mead (4.0), Diane Rogers & Gina Kelley (3.5 ), and Lisa McKenna (3.0).  Our Men's 3.5, Women's 4.0, Women's 3.5 and Women's 3.0 are off to the playoffs, so stay tuned for an update and a season summary next month.

Our 3.0 Ladies are in contention for a playoffs berth with their last match coming up vs. Central Park.  The team welcomed a number of new players this year who mixed in well and helped contribute to the strong showing.  All the matches have been close with long third set battles!

          Lisa McKenna

PCC Women's 4.0 Team had a fantastic season.  We were a mixed bag of rusty, seasoned and injured players.  We beat the bushes almost every match to get a full line-up, but everyone rearranged schedules to make it happen.  From such a humble beginning, it was a thrilling last match to defeat the undefeated 1st place team.  Now it's on to playoffs...

          Missy Rhen

The PCC Men's 4.0 team this year could be best described as an episode from "Deadliest Catch".  We had a 'greenhorn' for a captain, some key deckhands, a few cold-water rescues, and plenty of missing crab nets scattered about the peninsula.   Overall, it wasn't a successful season in the standings.  However, we had a bunch of fun over the past couple of months.  A couple of players worth mentioning based on their win/loss performances include Josh Krevetz (Bronco), Keith Krieg, and John Kirk.  A special thanks to Robert Falls and Don Rust for stepping up to the plate when we had a short roster!!

          Brett Ayoob

The 4.5 men had a good year.  Our record was 3-7, which was quite an improvement from last season. We narrowly missed making the playoffs, losing out in a tie breaker.  The 4.5 league was very competitive, with many strong players.  Our roster was very talented, but it was hard getting players out to the matches.  This is an area we hope to improve on next year.  Jose Avalos had the best record @ 6-1.  All in all, a fun season.  Looking forward to next year!

          Brian McRae

Both our 3.5 Women and our 3.5 Men's teams had incredible seasons and have taken home first place honors in their respective leagues.  The 3.5 women were captained by Dianne Rogers and the 3.5 men were captained by, Robert Falls.  Adonis Damian compiled a 5-0 record and Captain Robert a 8-1 record as standouts for the men's team.  on the Women's team there were a number of outstanding accomplishments led by undefeated players; Terri Mead 9-0, Erin Stockford 7-0, and Karen Spini 6-0.

By finishing as the top team in the league both will host home playoff matches.  We will send out an email when these matches are scheduled.  Let's get some PCC home team fans to come out and cheer our teams on.

Congratulations to all 6 of our USTA Spring Teams!

Coach Sid

swimschoolMore than just swim lessons

On the first day of swim lessons it is not uncommon for children to be a little

teary eyed. For most children this is a brand new experience, a brand new pool, and a brand new teacher. It's ok if they are a little nervous; it's normal. The important thing to remember is that

when this happens our staff knows how to get your child in the water and smiling by the end of the lesson. Our goal, as the swim school aquatics staff, is excellence which includes giving the best 30-minute lesson possible so your child will enjoy learning how to swim. PCC Swim School is where children will begin their swimming journey, overcome challenges and learn this life-long skill. It's where creativity, joy and swimming come together.

community

The Community Centers PE program is enjoying its summer of Renew. Since the school year ended we have been evaluating our program and making a few changes to better fill the physical and mental needs of our Redwood City students. We received great feedback from the schools we serve and quite a few thank you letters from our students. A trip to the country of Ghana is in the near future for two PE Program team numbers who will be bringing our sports outreach curriculum to rescued children at the City Of Refuge Orphanage.

Here are some of thank you letters we received from students from Taft and Hoover elementary school.
