June 2011

Director's Corner

Despite what the weather may indicate, summer has arrived at the Center!

This year our summer theme is RENEW. My favorite definition of RENEW is "to make new again; to restore to freshness."

Whether you are someone who has spent countless of summers at the Center or someone who will spend your first summer at the Center, our hope is the Center community will help RENEW you in significant ways.

For some, this may be the summer that you RENEW your compassion for someone within the Center community going through a difficult time. Others of you will RENEW your commitment to fitness by trying a new class like our new Tri Team Training class. There will be those of you who will RENEW your love for being with family and friends.

To help you and your family RENEW this summer, come and experience the following Center summer favorite events in addition to your typical Center activities:

-       Watermelon Wednesdays (my son's favorite)

-       Friday Night BBQs

-       Treasure Island

-       PCA Summer Swim Team

-       Junior Tennis Camp

-       PCC Swim School

-       4th of July Fun Run

This summer, we will also have the We Are PCC Block Party on July 3rd.  The PCC Center, Church, School Age Child Care and Preschool communities will all come together for a BBQ, Battle of the Bands, patriotic music sing-along, carnival games and bounce houses.  The best part is it's all FREE - and it's all together!  So, mark your calendars and join us.

See you at the Center!

Anthony

Dear Community Center Members,

My name is Jen Atkins. I am a Community Center member as well as a Center Board of Directors member. I am also a mom and a Center next-door-neighbor. Like you, my husband and our two young children love what the Center offers as a family oriented fitness center.

On behalf of the families and the homes that surround the Center, I would like to suggest some simple things that Center members can do to help make it a little easier for the Center neighbors during this upcoming busy summer season:

1.   Between the early Center hours of 5 a.m. - 8 a.m., many families are still sleeping:

·         Please try not to use your remotes for locking your cars because the beeping or honking car is especially disruptive in the early mornings.

·         During these early hours, please try to use low tones when enjoying the company of friends in the parking lots.

2.   We have made amazing progress in the last year with parking issues. Thank you for all your efforts.

·         Remember the parking available at Peninsula Covenant Church across the wooden bridge from the Center.  Thank you to the Center staff for utilizing this parking.

·         Please cross Jefferson safely - not just for you and your family, but also for the drivers who may not have a good angle to see you ahead of time.  We have witnessed too many close calls and urge you to be safe.

The Center is a vibrant addition to our community and we thank you for taking the time to help make it a little easier for the Center neighbors.

Thank you!

The Atkins family - Jen, Rob, Toby and little Naomi

TEAM ASCENT

Team Ascent is a tennis based community outreach program that has just finished its second year at 3 of our local high schools.  This program works in conjunction with our partner non-profit organization, "Serve the Peninsula".  Team Ascent reaches over 70 students that are at risk of expulsion from their schools for behavior and academic issues.  The students in the program have a rigid 2 hour tennis/fitness program and then have another 2 hour small group workshop on, life skills and decision making, one day every week for the nine month school year.

I would like to thank all of our tennis coaches: Paco Lopez, Julio Hermosillo, Jose Avalos, and Alex Martin, who worked so diligently for the entire year in often challenging circumstances.  Also, thank you PCC community for supporting our endeavors to make a positive impact on our community.

As a celebration for the students who completed the entire year of Team Ascent they were rewarded with a day of tennis, swimming, and BBQ at PCC on their last day of the program.

PCA Intra-squad Meet: A swimming success!!

On Friday May 20th at about 3:30pm, approximately 65 PCA swimmers (and their families) descended on the community center to participate in the Spring PCA Intra-squad meet. Dolphin swimmers between the ages of 4 and 13 came together to celebrate and showcase the knowledge they learned in PCA's spring session. Smiles, fast swimming and high fives filled the pool deck!

Not only did PCA's younger crowd fill the pool deck for this event, but older PCA swimmers came to show their support for their younger counterparts by volunteering to time and help run the meet. Swarms of PCA parents could also be seen about the deck helping time, shepherding and showing their support for their swimmers.

The Dolphins also owe a huge thank you to the PCC staff who helped to host this event and to Peninsula Covenant Church's Family Ministries who sent volunteers to help serve food and to help time the swim meet. PCA couldn't have done it without you!

"That was our first meet. Thank you for making it such a wonderful event!  And, thanks to PCC for food to the happy hungry masses. :)" -PCA parent

Goooooo Dolphins!

mastersPCA MASTERS SPLASHING INTO SUMMER

Summer is almost upon us, even if the weather seems a bit like winter lately, and the PCA Masters Swim Team is gearing up for a full summer of activity.

Open Water Competition begins with close  to twenty five swimmers either taking on the .75mile or the 2.5k open water swims of Lake Del Valle in Livermore on Sunday, June 12.  Many will be leaving PCC on a couple of vans for a full morning of swimming, and then joining one another at Garre' Winery for some relaxing and some lunch.  Probably a little wine tasting will be conducted as well.  It should be a fine kick off to a great summer of activity.

There are a number of other lake swims coming up as well, but the biggest focus of the summer will be the Trans Tahoe Relay taking place at Lake Tahoe on July 23.  PCA Masters has 10 teams of six swimmers each swimming across Lake Tahoe in relay fashion.  The water temp this year could be a bit on the cooler side as it is still snowing as I write this, and July is not that far away.  No wet suits are allowed, and each swimmer is in the water for a little less than an hour.  With this many teams, the competition among just us this year could prove to be intense, and at many of the workouts at the club I am hearing a bit of smack going on between the lanes.  A number of us will be training in the cooler waters of San Francisco Bay quite soon to prepare for the swim across Lake Tahoe.  All the swimmers and teams can be seen at the club on the Masters Bulletin Board near the Hot Tub by the Weight Room.

The workouts are well attended, even if the weather is not the best, and the swimmers are working hard to get in their best shape.  I am looking forward to a full summer of activity here at PCC and in the lakes and other venues around Northern California.   Have a great summer and remember,

Stay Fit!     Have Fun!     Get Wet!

Coach Mike

Lane Line Changes

Starting June 6, Lane line changes will occur 9 - 9:15am and again 6 - 6:15pm, Monday through Thursday. Please plan your swim workout accordingly.

No Lap Swim - one week only

June 6 - June 9, there will be no lap swimming available 3:45 - 6:45 due to swim team practice.

Help Keep the Pool Open this Summer!

Follow these simple directives and do your part to keep our pool open all season long.  Thank you!

DOUBLE DIAPER POLICY:Children in diapers must wear tightly BOTH a disposable swim diaper and reusable diaper (available at Front Desk). Even though water resistant, disposable swim diapers deteriorate and reach capacity quickly. The reusable diaper acts as a second layer of protection.

BATHROOM  Take your child to the bathroom at regular intervals.

HIT THE RED BUTTON If a child has a fecal accident in the baby pool, please push the Red button on the shed adjacent to the baby pool (alarm will sound) and inform front desk or a lifeguard IMMEDIATELY.

The two pools share a filtration system. When depressed, the red button shuts off the filtration system. If done soon enough after a fecal accident, the baby pool can be isolated, allowing the main pool to stay open while addressing the accident.

The Community Centers PE program just wrapped up its second school year serving local schools. This year the PE Programs 15 coaches had the honor of setting foot on 8 different elementary school campuses. They taught PE to 63 class rooms and played team sports with over seventeen hundred students each week. Part of the PE team also got the opportunity to serve in Ensenada Mexico, by bringing sports and Gospel to local children and churches we partner with. The 2010-2011 school year was a great success. Our team of coaches were not just PE teachers, they became family to the schools, friends to the teachers, and role models to the students. The number one thing that sticks out about this school year is RELATIONSHIPS, we've been able to build on our first years work and now have solid relationships with our local schools. WE LOVE THEM.

This summer will be full of planning and training for next school year. Part of our PE team will also be traveling to Ghana and bringing our sports outreach curriculum to rescued children at the City Of Refuge Orphanage.

If you would like more information on The PE Program, what we do,  and would like to support or partner with us in any way.
